General Medical issues thread

And this was on the ABC news site
What's it like to live with lupus?

That's an excellent article and so apt. Triple like. I was thinking that of all people I know you are the most likely to notice the changes having seen me super fit then 2 years later. Different person. It's got my blood. Skin. Some hand joints. Thankfully kidneys are good. Phew. But people would never know unless they could spot the rash in my head. Bought some moojuice shampoo today as it's supposed to help.
But I'm getting there. Planning Alaska again. For some reason I have a sense I need to do it in next couple of years. So I booked one and paid a deposit. That I refuse to cancel.
In the rheumatology waiting room there was an older lady with significant RA. Her hands were so deformed. She needed a walking stick. That she constantly dropped. Very sad.

There's always hope Pushka. That and faith. Never give up.

I woke up this morning and my whole spine was aching. My neck was also very sore. Everytime I moved my neck I could feel it through my entire body.

Some days are better than others. I want to get to the stage where I don't need to go to work and days like today I can just stay in bed and rest.

Ankylosing spondylitis, sacro iliitis, arthritis, tendinitis and bursitis are not a fun combination. Keep going for as long as possible.

I'm just getting maudlin JohnK. Had a bad migraine recently that resulted in my neck aching where I had the DVT. Was home alone and was worried about a stroke. Kept checking my face! That was last week. It was also the day that the RAH moved to its new location with so many hassles that all I was thinking was 'not tonight please'.

I've finally been able to start clinical Pilates to help sort out my back and knee. It can be super frustrating trying to get your brain to send the right signals to the muscles to move as needed, as I have some muscles that just don't fire correctly, causing others to overcompensate.

My brain doesn't register my knee's position unless it's locked back (hyperextended)...need to reprogram that!

Well I certainly can't say 'Like' to that. Glad that it was not serious. The mind does terrible things sometimes.

I did mention it to the rheumatologist and she said it was understandable but unlikely. And then went on to describe her colleague who'd had a stroke last week. He had a successful clot retrieval and improved almost immediately but next day his face was dropping again and one sided weakness returned.

I've had what my grandmother used to call 'sick headaches' for years. They stopped between '30's to '50's' but get them every few weeks now. Can't stand lights or noise and left side aches including teeth! Thankfully only last a couple of days and I go to ground.

Classic migraine though it sounds awful if they last a couple of days occur every few weeks. Is there any medication that you can use to stave off the attack?

Over the years I have worked out how to manage. Strangely I can take Panadol by the handful (not literally) when I don't have one of these. For Female stuff. So for years I would take panadol when having these headaches and would end up over the toilet bowl for hours. I didn't connect any dots until years later. Finally nurofen came on to the market. Once the initial nausea of the headaches subside (a few hours later) I have toast with Vegemite (Vit B) a cup of tea and 2 nurofen. Then sleep it off. The next day I'm groggy for a bit but then I feel really good!

If I don't drink enough or I have a really poor series of sleeps they are both triggers. But the head is also a classic issue of auto immune stuff.

I guess a good self therapy is that there is usually someone in a much worse situation.
My Dad , as a gold card vet , was fortunate to have the then "God of Eyes" in qld Prof Laurie Hirst, care for him.
Laurie did magnificent work and I was in awe of his skill.
Folks actually treated him with amazing reverence, something I failed to do and in the process found myself a friend.
Over time I saw many supplicants to this last resort consultant.
One morning early , I stuck up a conversation in the waiting room with a quiet young lady who seemed stressed and insecure.
She had flown in alone that morning from the middle of au,with blindness only weeks away and a chat with Laurie as a last chance.
I never heard the outcome , but it was a very sobering experience for a young rooster…….

If I can get drugs into me when I am still in aura phase then I can hold off the full blown attack and just get nausea and the painful head. I find Coke helps too as the caffeine gets the blood vessels pumping. But it does wipe me out afterwards.

Lately I have had a couple overnight so miss the drug window - and if this happens I get a rebound pounding head on and off for about 3 days which is exhausting.

I crave salty things afterwards.

My other indicators one is coming is I get this weird feeling in my cheekbones and feel anxious.

Man flu has finished but now Mrscove isn't feeling too chipper tonight. That Melbourne bug was quite nasty.

Think I've picked up the Scottish bug, few of the guys up there this week weren't too great and it's now hit me. No Davis Cup for me today, will be cheering on from the hotel. It will pass though (pun intended?), so fortunate to be in such a position. Best wishes to all those with much more serious ailments!

Yes Flashback we might pick up a bug or two but others can be doing it tough. Good luck to everyone who has a serious ailment. I hope you can beat it.

Migraines/headaches are not good especially when painkillers don't help.

Knowledge and wisdom are the upsides.
Knowing when you have had enough champagne and red wine at lunch..........
