And in news that will surprise nobody
UK Increased Covid Spread by Subsidizing Diners

“The government spent £500 million ($647 million) subsidizing the cost of restaurant meals and non-alcoholic drinks by as much as 50% in August, even after evidence had emerged that Covid-19 could easily spread in hospitality settings, a studyfrom the University of Warwick found”

Meanwhile they are paying 18 year olds working for Serco minimum wage to do contact tracing 🙄

Lockdowns and Europe.

And yet another pronouncement from a WHO official.

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere? But the legal challenge against Melbourne's curfew was thrown out. Judge found it was legal, and proportionate to the risk it was trying to address.

Wales going into full lockdown from Mon Nov 9 until Fri 19 Feb. Will be interesting to see what England ends up doing, ours expires on Dec 2 and will be reassessed then but this doesn't bode well.....
My god. How distressing for them. So damn long!

There was a modicum of Brouhaha on AFF over the quantum of the Governments suppression strategy.
Many argued that a more open and less invasive process would have been ok and that infection numbers would have been manageable.
Events in Europe and elsewhere seem to indicate that even relatively low infection tolerance tolerance leads to uncontrollable spread rates.
All this reminds me of Neville Shutes novel.. On the beach..
We may be about to suffer a Covid winter instead of the much feared Nuclear winter

Sorry but many of those countries with rapidly escalating numbers are in full lockdown
Taiwan with much better results than us has done so without ever going into full lockdown.
You need to get the basics right-excellent contact tracing and quarantine measures, hand washing and social distancing with mask wearing if indoors and outdoors if in large groups but not when when alone or when appropriate social distancing is possible.Plus protect the susceptible populations.

And in Europe it is a true second wave.the virus has mutated and the new mutation is much more infective.Which is why our hotel quarantine for those coming from OS needs to be perfect even for the rich, celebs and sports people.

Gosh you write some tripe.. do you actually read stuff others post or does your confirmation bias rule you completely ?

This is tripe…the current escalation was the cause of further lockdown after the economies were allowed to open up again.......sheesh...

I don't need to get anything right, but opine that the kind of social disciplines that may have allowed Taiwan to do very well is quite unachievable in Australia.
Our citizens have rights.. and entitlements.. and can make their own decisions about stuff without big brothers instructions…...
You want an open economy while enforcing masks, locking up the aged , and all the rest of the misery.. try selling that to the average joe...

When I was in Taiwan in December, lots of people were already wearing masks. We caught quite a few trains while there and as soon as you heard a single cough there was an automated announcement to remind people to wear masks and/or not travel if feeling unwell... Just saying.

Ahem. Victoria? ;)

So tgh you wrote this.
This is tripe…the current escalation was the cause of further lockdown after the economies were allowed to open up again.......sheesh...

But I presume you missed this point.
"And in Europe it is a true second wave.the virus has mutated and the new mutation is much more infective."Far be it for me to suggest it doesn't confirm your point.
The escalation now is probably due to a more infective mutation rather than the fact the countries weren't in lockdown. Many are now of the opinion hard lockdowns are counter productive.

Sorry but I would prefer the rights I preserve under the Taiwan system rather than the Victorian system.Besides those Victorian restrictions were sold to an awful lot of ordinary citizens.
And I didn't say lock up the aged but they should immediately have access to appropriate PPE.Restrict visitors but allow visits with appropriate precautions unlike the total stopping of visits that was done here.Too cruel.

Sure!

If I have read that right it is to give them the ability to have those measures for that time period, rather than they will be in place for the entire duration. It also has some fixed review dates locked into it.

Part 1 provides that these Regulations come into force on 9 November 2020 and must be reviewed by 19 November, at least once in the period from 20 November to 3 December, at least once in the period from 4 December to 17 December, and at least every 21 days after that. It also provides that unless the Regulations are revoked or amended before then, they expire on 19 February 2021.

Yes that is true, but given the lack of impact from the 2 week circuit breaker they had I take a bit more of a pessimistic view and look at the worst case date rather than the (unlikely) better case date. Lockdown 1.0 had similar and ended up going on for a long time even with fixed review dates...

More confirmation bias RooFlyer….. reading something different to the common english meaning of what I write ?
Victoria successfully locked down as a necessary short term measure.
What the good doctor proposes is minimal social and business restrictions and some kind of utopian ppi regime where everyone cruises around in a fog of rampant infection but remains uninfected by wearing a mask, washing hands and keeping social distance…..
