Garuda Indonesia named Best International Airline

Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia’s national carrier, has been recognised as ‘Best International Airline for January 2012’ according to a recent independent survey of major airlines across the world. \

The Customer Satisfaction survey conducted by research company Roy Morgan, ranked Garuda Indonesia ahead of other leading airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Air New Zealand with a monthly satisfaction score of 91 per cent. A total of 3943 respondents were surveyed on how satisfied they were with the airline they used between February 2011 and January 2012.

Given that this measures actual onboard experiences, not the perceptions of safety ( based on Garuda's historical safety record), it may well make sense. Especially if you consider the competition on its main Australian routes is with Jetstar and Virgin's 737 operations. Having flown GA three times domestically in 2010 , with complete with AVOD on two of these flights, their onboard service on domestic sectors was certainly better than other SE Asian domestic flights (eg MH, PR, TG) I have taken and up there or better than QF domestic.

I'm still refusing to touch Garuda. I remember being excited at seeing a discount Business Class airfare being advertised until being sent the formal quote and seeing Garuda on it.

As someone with a bit of an insight into this organisation, I'm not placing much credence in the survey.

OK let's all have a good laugh. Can google Roy Morgan and Satisfaction Survey to find out more detail about survey methodology - which seems to relate to solely to customer satisfaction - not other factors such as safety reputation. I am assuming once someone has taken the flight and lived to tell the tale they are in a reasonable position to indicate whether they were satisfied with the service provided or not, and the survey wouldn't be about the reputation of the airline, but the actual experience.

I can fully understand why people are critical of GA's safety record, and have ongoing concerns about integrity of the safety processes given the culture in which GA operates, and I myself was extremely hesitant to fly them (but would take them any day domestically over all other domestic carriers, except perhaps Air Asia Indonesia). But unless you have flown them (and they have landed you safely back on the ground ) how can you actually make a judgement on customer satisfaction for flights over a specific period? I see no reason to doubt the respondents to the survey - I can understand why they might actually be satisfied with the service provided.

Garuda Indonesia Airlines has suffered numerous airline accidents since 1970. Nine fatal accidents have been reported in three decades. In 1974 and 1975, 49 passengers (combined) were killed in two botched landing attempts; in 1982 a plane hit mountainous terrain killing 57 people; in 1982, 22 people died in another botched landing attempt; 57 passengers were killed upon take-off in 1983; another botched landing attempt killed 23 people in 1987; in 1996 an aborted takeoff killed three people; in 1997 a plane hit mountainous terrain killing 222 passengers; and in 2007, a plane overran the runway killing 133 passengers.​

As I said safety issues are serious. But the 2007 accident, did not kill 133 pax, it had 21 fatalities, which is of course still not good, especially if you were one of or knew one of those 21.

Two killers: rust and chronic reliability issues. Mum and dad had one (they'd traded a Passat in 1982); it was the biggest POS ever (I still remember the hot summer day that the alternator packed it in on the Burwood Highway).

As for Garuda, it does look good in its revamped version. Additionally, the most recent fatal accident was due to the pilot acting in a dangerous manner (which can happen on any airline; see KLM Flight 4805). BUT the nonchalant attitude of the Indonesian authorities towards the Captain was the real cause for concern, and it'll take another decade or two of blemish-free flying before GA goes back on my radar.
