From Zero to QF Platinum Flying Economy

I'd always though rather than the PER J Lounge Qantas should have created a FIFO Area.

No need for specific access rules, just say a beer only bar, deal with Foxtel to show sports replays, bar style food.

Simply playing to the general preferences of the market.

But also allowing someone in dayglo and boots to have a Chardonnay and quinoa

A pretty surprising response. I would think plenty of Platinums at the back of the bus on an international flight.

I've certainly done plenty of international economy flights with the fam for holidays using my employer-funded WP status :D

Maybe the FA was quite new. I’ve had WP for about 7 years off and on, just about all disc Y mostly trans Tasman. There were plenty of others too. Cheers

I did this too mainly on other people’s momey. And flying some virgin too. DSC helped in one year otherwise trips to USA or Europe made the difference in others.

Given the SC Syd - Adel is 20 when it was 30, it starts to get difficult to do more trips

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I made Platinum for the first time with DSCs. Although most of my flights were economy, I did fly a handful of times in Premium Economy to Hong Kong and Business to Auckland (on $600 each way sale fares) and that helped significantly.

I gained and maintained Platinum for 3 years, flying internationally (with a few domestic flights) all in discount economy.

It was tough and I received an upgrade only once during that period. Believe me when I say it was welcomed with great joy - sleep being the major reason for such happiness.

Hope you manage to enjoy the pointy end more often than I did - you’ll welcome the ability to actually sleep, and the food is a darn sight better, if only in the presentation. And the whiskey!!!

In my 'glory' days I earned all of my SC in QLD on a mixture of JASA's and economy comfort seat bookings, the majority coming from the latter. It was a particularly fun way to get there!

WP mostly employer funded. WP in Y is a solid effort but sounds very tiresome.

Those of you out there doing it all in Y need an employer with a more generous travel policy :p. Ours was all J pre 2009 (really wish I was old enough to be working pre GFC) I understand, but now still fairly generous with J over 3 hours.

I wish my employer would have a more generous travel policy, but that's the way it is. They let me choose to fly QF and don't require me to pick the cheapest fare of the day which is more generous than some employers that will tell you which airline you must fly and require the cheapest fare of the day.

If it were not for personal travel in J I wouldn't have got/retained WP.

but now still fairly generous with J over 3 hours.
That is extremely generous. J for short flights is a luxury, especially if you can grab row 4 in economy on domestic flights.

A short time ago I boarded a QF international flight and had a conversation with the flight attendant who was surprised to see a QF Platinum sitting at the back of the aircraft. I informed her that I arrived at Platinum by flying discount economy or economy for all of my status points. She said in 12 years of working with Qantas as a flight attendant she had never met anyone who got to Platinum by flying only economy.
Many of the status points were business related as my company always pays the cheapest fares available. Even so, when I fly for leisure I always book the cheapest fare available. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Yeah I go there first through a lot of Y work flights (mix of red and flex) SYD->ADL and overseas holidays. Got harder after SYD->ADL was downgraded to 10SC.

I know of at least one person here who made P1 on domestic Y trips

I managed 4 years of P1 of mainly Domestic and TT economy - (along with collateral VA Plat) - 160-200 flights a year, 250+ nights in hotels ... but many of these were flexible Y and some creative flight paths at times to maintain. Decided to just go back to vanilla WP before it would have long term impacts on my life, so coasting at 2000 SC a year now and much happier. :)
