A short time ago I boarded a QF international flight and had a conversation with the flight attendant who was surprised to see a QF Platinum sitting at the back of the aircraft. I informed her that I arrived at Platinum by flying discount economy or economy for all of my status points. She said in 12 years of working with Qantas as a flight attendant she had never met anyone who got to Platinum by flying only economy.
Many of the status points were business related as my company always pays the cheapest fares available. Even so, when I fly for leisure I always book the cheapest fare available. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

There are a few of us here who have made WP on discount economy - mine we also mostly employer funded

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I’m currently WP and have only got there thanks to some J travel on DSC. I’d like to fly more than I do, but not sure I’d want to fly enough to get WP just from the cheapest economy fares.

With the endless DSC promotions, I would assume a large number will 'fake' WP status on purely Y travel....

I fly Perth to Karratha every week for work in economy which gets me 60 status credits each week so I get to retain my platinum after 20 weeks once my status credits get reset.

And I suspects almost everyone on the aircraft is the same Deeks.

Re DSC remember it's a very small booking window - I suspect the numbers who use it are relatively small

I m sure that someone out there manages P1 on Y alone. 3600 SC is "only" 70 per week, if done all the year.

I shudder at that sort of flying :O

Yeah your right there moa999. At least it is handy to have it for when I go on personal flights to other destinations.

Most of the people I know who are WP have gotten there just by flying economy for work. They are all my colleagues who fly at least a return domestic trip weekly though.

I'm currently WP due mostly to (lots of!) discount Y between MEL and CDG last year.

Regards,

BD

I first became WP commuting MEL SYD down the back of the bus and many of my retained years were also all done in domestic Y.

I'm retired now (10 years), but did have Plat for my last 6 years at work and only flew discount Y. I also achieved Life Time Gold. It can be done, but you get a numb bum!

Never earned a DSC credit in my life (my bad I know). Only got a points bonus once.

I presume QF uses DSC promotions to try to manage QFF status pax numbers as well as drum up revenue (though they could just do points offers if they were only looking to spike revenue I presume).

As opposed to real 'employer funded' status?

As a self funded traveller, I have no issues at all with 'employer funded' status. We both earn our status at a similar cost overall and with a similar amount of effort (BIS time).

I cannot understand why some self funded travellers believe they should be treated any different (or preferentially) to the next paying customer...
