So what's next? No bottles over 100mL on domestic flights? Arrive at the airport three hours prior?

Security slow lanes will now be available at our airports.

Just spare a thought for the poor people who work the national security hotline. They are about to get inundated with calls which go a little like this

"Yeah, I'm calling about my neighbour, I'm pretty sure he's (insert appropriate word - Muslim / Dark Skinned / Middle Eastern) just thought you should know".

A friend of mine worked on the hotline for a little while when it was first introduced, and that was typical of the calls he got.

Business as usual everyone. Thankfully Australia will see very little difference to current security levels. Maybe an extra check here and there, that will be it.

From 'alert' to 'alarmed': terror threat level has been raised from medium to high

Self fulfilling prophecy. I'm very alarmed about it all.

Re: From 'alert' to 'alarmed': terror threat level has been raised from medium to hig

I sincerely hope I am not proven wrong - but I really don't see the point in making a big deal about raising our alert status?

In the UK I could understand it - but here in Australia I seriously wonder what all the fuss is about, and I would hope we have a competent security service able to monitor our small and confined population (no open borders like in Europe or guns like the USA). Create panic in the population? Show how decisive our government is and deflect from the budget woes?

Re: From 'alert' to 'alarmed': terror threat level has been raised from medium to hig

I would guess that the threat level has been raised due to an increase in intelligence chatter. Which may not mean a specific threat ...

Perhaps an increase in the number of random checks will result.

<redacted>

Re: From 'alert' to 'alarmed': terror threat level has been raised from medium to hig

I think that the plan is we are alarmed but not alert.

Good to see security services, Intel, defence, AFP, state agencies and the Gov working as one unit.

13 years ago there was a good example of what can occur when the teams don't work together!

What's the difference between the UK and here? ... A couple of deranged lunatics walking the high street with knives and machetes ?

Some suburbs in Australia are worse than the UK IMHO.

More people will be bom@ residue tested at our domestic airport terminals.
More profit from our airline security taxes go from airline coffers to that if the airline xray companies.
Mire ticks or marks on that "special" checksheet at the xray zone of Aust airport domestic terminals.

The wand captains will be very very very happy knowing they can thwirl their wands with more "authority".
They are always picky up to now, but after this alert, wow, I am so "scared"!

My guess is the more readily available supply of weapons material that could be used for terror attacks.

Given mail and passenger screening coming into Australia I would hope we have borders which are relatively more secure than in the UK. Not to say the UK authorities aren't doing their best job - but the sheer volume of ferry traffic for example could make it easier to smuggle in people and weapons material.

We have a tiny border (as far as entry points and number of people) here in AU compared to the UK.

Our borders are just as porous as any other - more so due to the massive coastline that requires constant surveillance. If drugs can get in .... everything can get it.

I wonder how our police forces would react if we decided to remove all firearms (like their UK colleagues ) from their utility belts ?

Of course availability is still a relative terms when explosive can be forgotten about and mistakenly left at an airport.

Re: From 'alert' to 'alarmed': terror threat level has been raised from medium to hig

About time they introduced a trusted traveller status. I didn't attack an aircraft the last 500 times I flew, do I need another explosives test.

Speaking if which, took someone from work to the lounge the other night. They complained about the drug test. Glad to be able to let them know it was for explosives.
