However it has been explained to me that if have single vehicle accident eg hit a kangaroo between I think it was 6pm and 6am are up for $2200 excess.
You should never ever have a single vehicle accident. Not if the car is still drivable after the accident.

And I don't have a conscious and can easily sleep at night.

If you are dealing with thieves the game is different.

If you hit a kangaroo, you have a reasonable chance of the car not being driveable. Further, what you are suggesting appears to involve another potentially innocent car!

Yes I know. Need to weigh up the good and bad and whether one can still get through the Pearly Gates.

Hypothetical situation.

Hire a car and have no travel insurance and do not choose the option to reduce the excess. With Hertz I believe that is $3,500 excess and $2,000 for single vehicle accident excess. What happens if you hit a kangaroo and the damage to the car is $2,500? You end up paying $5,500 and Hertz pockets the rest? Or do you pay the lesser amount to fix the damage? It does not seem ethical or fair that Hertz gets to pocket that money. Does it?

But in that case the towies would/could be pursued via their liability/professional indemnity cover?
True, but that is not really the point of what I'm saying. What if the damage was done by the louts pushing the car down the embankment rather than the towies? No one to chase then.

What happens if you hit a kangaroo and................

...........it gets thrown up onto the roof of the vehicle? No insurance it seems. Where do these stupid conditions come from? Why pick on just roof and undercarriage damage. Why didn't they also write out body panels? What's the difference between roof panel damage and door panel damage?????

Not only are the excess amounts obscene, but the policy is cough and certainly not comprehensive.

For a start, Hertz excess is $4,000 + possibly airport surcharge + $2,200 SVA + possibly airport surcharge, so a total of at least $6,200.

Hertz standard terms are very clear (Gold terms not clear) that if you hit an animal, you will be charged both excesses. If the damage ends up being less, difference will be refunded. Likely if you hit a roo the damage will be more!

In practice, I think you would get ADE & SVA, but it isn't clear.

My understanding is the conditions are there for idiots that don't care what they drive over or under.

In practice, the overhead and undercarriage damage exclusions only apply if that is the sole damage, which will likely be caused a lack if care or stupidity.

Why do I say this? In any major crash, the undercarriage will be damaged. Also, hail damage is commonly to the roof and Hertz clearly state you will be harmed ADE & SVA.

I have used www.worldwideinsure.com for one off rentals, they have specific car hire excess insurance. I think they have annual policy but it does have a limit on number of days. I did look at a few online reviews before selecting it, but haven't made a claim so don't know personally how good they are at paying up etc.

I also use worldwide insure and have an annual policy which costs ~ $99. It has a max of 31 days per rental but unlike many policies does cover damage to windscreens and any auto glass, roof, tyres and underbody.

Another for Worldwide insure here - since living in the UK and being stung with Hertz's clause not covering windscreen damage I've had it ever since.

I pay £55 per year which covers rentals in the UK as well (cheaper option does not cover rentals in country of residence). It does not cover "prestige" cars.
