Firstly I'd like to say that this is a fantastic site and I think that guy who created the concept (and yes I did see you on TV when they aired that Today Tonight or A Current affair thingy a long while back) but I'm beginning to get annoyed with the fixed advertising on the top of the page.

I know that you generate revenue from this but could you please either make it a bit smaller (or flatter), or put it running down the side of the page or simply not fix it to the top.

It takes up about 25% of my desktop real estate and this is bit excessive in my opinion.

Regards
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Thanks for taking the time to air your concerns. Your feedback is important.

As you correctly point out, we do rely on advertising to generate revenue - however, if its anoying to our regular users we will need to investigate other options.

On the web browsers in our office, only a relatively modest amount of screen real estate is used by the advertising. Maybe its different on your browser? Could you please email me ([email protected]) a screen dump from your browser so that I can investgate.

Thanks again for your input.

Just sent you the screen dump and found out that I can bypass the advertising frame on top if I click on the FF direct link in my email.

This is probably why I feel I get hit by the large advertising frame you have on top as I'm used to nothing.

To see the advertising frame just go to the main FF web page and then click on the Discussion Forum link.

Regards
Daniel

I don't have any problems with the advertising on the forum browser screen. But I really dislike (   ) the pop-up that apears every time I open a message. You know the one about "Fly First Class Everytime" or the one about the NC headphones.

I can tolerate the level of advertising on the pages I am viewing. But I really do find pop-up advertising to be intrusive (I had a few other words to put here, but thought better of it :x ).

Browsers with popup blockers are good :)

Mind you, they have a habit of blocking the pop up window for award bookings on Qantas site as well

The Google Toolbar comes complete with a pop-up blocker which works very well with this site, and have never had a problem with other sites - it can be switched on and off with a single click if it does cause specific problems.

There is always the option of allowing the popups on the particular site in question :!:

Yeah, I know about the various pop-up blocking functions, but I really don't believe I should have to install extra software (potential spyware, virus, instability etc) just to stop the annoying advertising pop-ups. The Google Toolbar is just another form of advertising anyway.

In my opinion, pop-up advertising is SPAM and should not be permitted.

The latest version of IE has a popup blocker as part of the base program, so do Mozilla and Netscape.

Some popups have a purpose however I must agree that most are SPAM :!:

Unfortunately, I have to run the corporate SOE on my computer, so Mozilla is not an option for me on this PC. And Win XP SP2 breaks some corp apps, so that is also out for now. So that means I get SPAMed by the popup advertising for a while.

I agree entirely. Our antiquated version of Win NT at work struggles just to run itself let alone anything more upmarket.

Well guys,

How about working at work, and doing your personal things on your computer at home.

Then you won't have this problem. :)

What a quaint idea.

Hmm, that would mean actually finding the demarkation between home and work. Not so simple in my case. Work happens any time I am required, and can be any hour of the day or night depending on the timezone of collegues I am working with. Home is basically the rest of the time. Either way I will be sitting at my desk in my home, and I don't have room for two PC's here on my desk - already have two printers, one for work and one for home  , and 5 phones, four for work and one for home  .

Similar problem to NM although I only do about 20% of my book/desk work at home :!: :(

I'm all for your idea in theory though. :D

I've been following this thread with interest. As an internet user, I agree that advertisements (and in particular pop-ups) are annoying and a distraction from the purpose of the visit to the website. But as an internet publisher, I have expenses which need to be paid and therefore do require a revenue stream. And the reality is that pop-up advertisements are effective.

OK, so as a compromise between the wishes of our community and the commercial reality of making a buck, I have removed all pop-up advertisements from the website. Banner and Google Ads remain.

Have also tried a bit of an experiment: we are now accepting donations to keep the site pop-up advertising free. You can make your donation by clicking on the "Make a Donation" button on the About Us page. I wonder how of you will take up this challange?

Thank you for your quick response. I really do appreciate the commercial reality of advertising revenue and the costs associated with operating a service such as this, and am happy to access advertising on the page I am reading. After all, you are proving this as a free service to me, and for that I am greatly appreciative.

And I am equally as appreciative of the lack of pop-ups now :D :D :D .

I also appreciate using this site free of charge and now with the lack of the popup. Could you not include the advertising in the banner also? Or maybe have the popup in another area of the site rather than the forum?? Whilst your trying to make some money from the forum the cost of hosting a forum is next to nothing so I'm not sure why there is a need to ask for donations or have the popup advertising in the forum area??? Maybe a fee/donation could be applied to the newsletter to cover researching costs?

I certainly am not getting them since Admin so kindly altered the advertising policy. Again, great thanks for being responsive. I am happy to come by more regularly now knowing that I am not going to gte spammed.
