Free travel insurance

Has anyone tried out that free travel insurance that comes with the Gold Card? Seems to good to be true to me.

Anna, don't know which Gold Card you are talking about (Amex, Citibank, Westpac, National, to name a few) but know that nothing is free. The price is built into the charges that the card provider is hitting you with.

Most travel insurance has good coverages - I've only claimed once in 15 years of having it, but it was worth it.

Free travel insurance is worth exactly what you pay for it.

In addition to the employer-provided policy, I've always opted for the QF Executive travel insurance. It's a near-perfect fit for my usual travel profile, your mileage may vary.

Be sure to check that medivac is covered, luggage loss including valuable items like laptops, cameras, etc and emergency cash.

Westpac goldcard works perfectly for me and fully refunds anything I pay for the card. Drop into your friendly Westpac branch before they close in your suburb and they will give you all the details. Remember Westpac they were the ones who talked me into joining Ansett FF/ Global Rewards and then flew out the back door when Ansett hit the deck!
But do not consider flying without insurance under any circumstances.

I've taken steps to quit ANZ cards.....
We've all watched the value go down the drain?
If it's not points being decreased.... it's other benefits being discontinued!
I'm hoping on an application to Citibank for Platinum!!!

If you have an ANZ Gold Visa, it said "travel accident insurance no longer applies". A different animal to "travel insurance", which still applies if you put at least $250 of your itinerary on the card.

This Travel Accident Insurance change applies to the ANZ Gold Visa and the Qantas ANZ Gold Visa.

Ah willyroo, welcome to posting here...indeed, a very good point. That's why I don't bother with it, AI really isn't worth too much...you need comprehensive cover as you will no doubt agree in your work capacity.

++ The CBA Gold Credit Card offers free travel Insurance as long as the tickets has been purchased on the card. They even cover your spouse.

-- I believe there is one person taking them action against them as they have disallowed a large claim. I cannot recall the full details but it was reported in the press recently. :twisted:

Another quirky Travel Insurance story - my Mother in law had a fall and broke her false teeth.

When reading the fineprint of her particular policy I discovered that dentures fall under the optical cover - strange one but covered all but $50 and the excess of the policy.

Moral - if you have expensive teeth and expensive eyeware - check your limits and coverage

I've just had a look at the limits of the CBA travel insurance and I'm not sure I would want to rely on it for anything important on an overseas trip. A good concept however the limits appear to be way toooooo low :!:

Having only ever needed to use travel insurance once it was great to have a policy that paid dividends. (I even made a profit on the exchange rates :!: )
