There is however another set of terms and conditions for the passenger who registered for the promotion that allows them to enter the QF Lounge,

Can anyone register for the promotion? If not, what's the basis for the exclusion? And if there is an exclusion, is there an exemption?

As pointed out above, there are exemptions from age discrimination. These are based on an identified need, or to comply with any applicable laws.

Offering discounts to pensioners or students, or families with children will likely fall within the 'identified need' category (that is, lower income). Other age discrimination, such as refusing entry to a venue, may also be legal if alcohol is served and the person is under 18.

Offering luxury lounge facilities doesnt appear, at first instance, to meet any of the categories to apply for an exemption.

Here we have a case where two people buy the exact same product. This could be at the same time, for the same price, with all the same terms and conditions. However one person is offered a free lounge pass and the other is not. The reason the second person is refused the lounge pass is solely because of their age.

Surely assuming that students or pensioners have financial difficulties and automatically require income assistance is also age discrimination?

I thought discrimination on the basis of age was illegal...

"Direct discrimination occurs when someone treats, or proposes to treat, the aggrieved person less favourably than it treats, or would treat, a person of a different age under circumstances that are the same or materially the same...".... So 2 people buying a ticket for the same flight, same day, same class, same price.... only difference is age? Sounds like these are the same circumstances to me.....

But if we are going down this crazy route let's open the door right up! Try a race and religious based promo too... see where that gets you? And while we are at, I definitely feel we need more cats in the lounge - not just companion animals, but any old regular pet.

Indeed, when I first saw this promo I thought 'yet more lounge crowding' off the back of the DSC crowds. And maybe lounges that are like crowded nightclubs will appeal to 18-39s; yes canny stuff, CMO :).

In fact it's a masterstroke, QF have perversely enhanced WP status, who now have the added benefit of a first class lounge free of the pre-Bali flight dance crowd in SYD and MEL. Pure genius, CMO :D.

cheers skip

Don't forget that lounge entry is always subject to space restrictions.

No doubt gold frequent flyers and those who have paid for club membership will be delighted when they are turned away because the lounge is already full of Y passengers on comped passes.

The pass is for international lounges where the dress regs of the domestic lounges do not apply. I guess the CMO was a couple of steps ahead of you

Dress code doesn’t apply in international lounges.

So far it's been too long to read but let's not forget that the QFI "Business" lounges are really just the international version of the QP, ie SG and QP members are also eligible for entry.

This promo would be marketing Gold. I saw the Canberra Flight Deck Club for the first time in maybe 1986 and maybe @trooper was there.

As soon as I got a corporate job at 25 years of age, I joined FD and here I am 30 years later as a Gold and about to fly off to Europe on a QF fare.

Still no email from QF with the lounge pass. He is flying soon.

Maybe time for QF to ditch that dress code.

It's been mentioned multiple times in the thread so far - there is no QF dress code in their international lounges.

Yes I know but if QF's strategy is to get them to buy QF club membership, then it would be relevant.

That's actually a really good point. So in fact the CMO would be fired when eventually the twitter storm of "#false advertising" overwhelms the bots that monitor Qantas' twitter feed... to have a promo whereby people are invited for FREE into a superior lounge, wearing their fav wife-beater and thongs (assuming that the international clubs at least insist on footwear??), conned into buying a QC membership, only to discover that in the real world the domestic lounges they will most likely use are far inferior, PLUS they will get lectured on what to wear!! #sadfaceqantas

Lol that makes no sense at all.... if anywhere had a dress code one would assume it to be the First Lounge

There's an old adage that millionaires dress in expensive Italian suits, billionaires wear jeans and white sneakers bought from Kmart (just look at Bill Gates).

I think most people who fly paid first couldn't give a flying fk what people think of them, they dress for comfort on the flight. I usually wear shorts & thongs when flying international because it's a lot easier to change into the QF PJs onboard.
