There's a sale on at the moment where for specific routes (HKG, LHR and DFW) where you can select First Class in one direction "as no additional cost".

I had the email a week or so back. I thought the promotion had already ended but obviously not if they are still putting the information out. There is another thread on here somewhere about it.

I read some where either here or on Aus BT that points and status credits will be earned as first. Therefore they suggested that the points earned would go a long way to getting an upgrade award on the return journey from J to F.

Forget the article ... Just check the fare bucket on booking ... A ... booked in A earn First points/SC's.

I can confirm that Qantas Points and Status Credits will be earned at First rates on the upgraded flight as part of this offer.

Good timing for me - booked MEL/LHR return last week for late September. Business over, 3A back, for ~ $8,900. Can't wait!
