Free flight for those disrupted.

I think it's a nice gesture from Qantas and will be happy to take the ticket.

The flight that got cancelled for me was a business class flight, so it would have been nice to have been given a free flight of the same class that was originally booked, but beggars can't be choosers!

Red Roo, just a clarification, when you say Valid on point-to-point flights only, does this mean I can only book a flight if there is a direct single hop from my exit port. For example, if I wanted to fly from CBR-TSV and the only way up there was CBR-BNE-TSV, is that included. Or does point-to-point just mean I can't stop off on the way?

From what I remember seeing in the FAQ, something in addition to what has already been offered will be made to those who had business/first bookings...
 
My wife was on the 11.30pm (AWST) flight out of Perth on Monday night. I guess that means she misses out on the freebie as the cut off was 11.59pm AEST on the terms and conditions.

Do you think Qantas would be strict on the timing? Flight was delayed by 30 mins but she was worrying all day on Monday on whether she would get home and not enjoying her trip!

What are the opinions of people on here who normally only fly premium cabins on QF and have been given the free flight? Is it something you would take up or it's of no interest to you?

I saw in the Fin Review yesterday that Qantas are offering each person who had a flight cancelled by the recent grounding a free return domestic or trans-Tasman flight. I wasn't personally affected by the grounding as I rarely fly Qantas but one of my best friends had checked in for a flight ADL-SYD (then onto Santiago!!) at 4.30pm with the grounding being called as she was walking to the boarding gate. She was hugely affected, and p*ssed off (managed to get on a flight to Santiago on LAN 2 days later). I doubt this will do much to appease her anger or convince her to fly Qantas again.

However if I was affected and received this offer, I would rort it for all it was worth, taking the longest, most expensive point-to-point flight I could find (MEL-DRW anyone? PER-BNE?). It seems off that everyone who was affected gets the same offer, regardless of whether your flight was a 1 hour domestic or a 15 hour international? Surely people will really go to town on this and plan ridiculous holidays just to get back at Qantas?
 
what is the longest p2p Qantas flight in Australia/tasman?

PER-CNS?

MEL-BME?

PER-AKL?
 
The qantas website tells me PER-CNS is operated by the orange cancer. So that wouldn't be eligible for the free flight.

Thanks Gusty, it will be nice if that's the case. I'll have a read of the FAQ's and see what I can find!
 
I can understand the angst that goes behind rorting this offer for all it's worth, why would you subject yourself to a return trip to place that is so far away and probably somewhere you never wanted to go to anyway?

I have an additional flight set for this Friday on the booking affected by the Grounding.
 
Hmmm, I had a flight cancelled, but it was booked and paid for by my employer .... I wonder how that will work?

Not sure if I am eligible

I was booked MEL-SIN on QF10 in Sunday 30Oct11 which was cancelled. After trying to get onto the QFF Contact Centre for a few hours on the evening of 29Oct11, I finally got through and was put onto the JQ7 flight on 30Oct11. So, I did fly with JQ, but not with QF and I did earn miles and SC on the flight (after a phone call to fix the miles & points allocation).

Now, on the QF web site (Fly with us, on us.) it states:
If you were one of those Australian passengers whose flight was cancelled due to the grounding of the fleet, and you were due to travel between 5:00pm AEDT Saturday 29 October through 11:59pm AEDT Monday 31 October, we will be in touch soon with the primary contact on your booking to outline the details of how you can take up this offer.
Since my flight (QF10) was cancelled, I should be eligible according to the above quote, but since I did fly on an alternate flight and I did earn SC and miles, and as I have not yet received an email from Qantas indicating I would be eligible for one of these compensation flights, I am wondering if I am entitled or not.

Thoughts?

I went to book a flight through my TA today, and noticed I had a voucher for ~$220, and was booking a flight worth about $230. The voucher was applied and the $230 flight became worth $220 (these are rough figures), so I wasn't out of pocket. I'm assuming this was just Qantas' way of providing a refund for my cancelled flight? I didn't see a credit card refund come through.

If someone took the longest possible flight they could find to earn SCs/QFF points, I'd call them an AFFer.

If someone took the longest possible flight they could find purely to "go to town" on Qantas, I'd suggest they need to take a long, hard look at themselves...

Personally I'll be taking a long flight (either Perth or NZ), but only because I was planning to fly to one of those destinations after Christmas anyway (using the free AMEX flight for my fiancee). So it all works out well for me, but there'll be no deliberate "rorting" of Qantas... :rolleyes:
 
I wouldn't call any of this "rorting" the system.

The offer from Qantas is part of its compensation to passengers. Qantas has disrupted the travel plans of it's customer to benefit it's own actions for the industrial dispute, I don't side with either Qantas or the Unions - both have penalised customers which is the lifeblood of both the Unions and Qantas.

It had been noted that the ACCC was already reviewing the compensation offered to its affected customers. Allowing refunds only to affected passengers located in their home state is not satisfactorily compensation. The offer of a free flight is. A contract is formed when an offer and acceptance is made. Qantas was contractually obligated to offer the services - subject to changes outside its control (i.e. force majeure, technical difficulties etc).

I would like to see the seat availability on offer, as I suspect there is only "marginal" costs to Qantas - and this offer will be most likely filled using vacant seats or by taking away some frequent flyer seat availability.

I do plan to use my free ticket on the most desirable destination - not be distance/status credits - but where I most want to travel (domestically) over the next year.

In the same boat as you.

My email is listed as the contact in the Manage my bookings section, but because it has been booked through the corporate travel agent, features like flight changes are disabled online, so the primary contact may be hidden in the back end there.

Has anyone recieved the email yet?
