Frequent flyers may sample A380

Privileged Qantas frequent flyers could fly over Australia free in a new Airbus A380 superjumbo later this year.

The move has been suggested as part of a publicity blitz to raise awareness about the A380, according to the Herald Sun.

The flight would be part of a visit to Sydney by the new aircraft, which Airbus hopes to conduct later this year.

An A380 demonstration aircraft has visited Australia on two previous occasions.

Qantas has ordered 20 of the huge planes, with the first not expected to be in operation until August next year. -

Any idea how safe this aircraft is? With all the dramas and delays there is always the temptation to rush things..... But there is a lot of frog pride at stake so on the other hand maybe they are being extra cautious.

The whole affair has not exactly stimulated confidence for me.

Like most of these occasions I'm more than happy to let others go ahead. I'll keep the tail end of the queue tidy.

The Airbus A380 is actually the safest airliner in the world, going on its record.

The A340 has had no fatal accidents at all.

The A330 has had seven fatalities, all on a development flight prior to service entry.

B737, 747, 757 and 767 models all have fatality numbers into the hundreds and thousands. The B777 has had one fatality.

I'd be happy to travel on an A380 promotional flight. In fact I was hoping that Qantas would have at least one in service for my upcoming trip in April, but sadly the delays have scotched my hopes.

I don't mind waiting another 4 or 5 years when they have had tens of thousands of successful flights....

Heck, I'm a daredevil. I want to be in on this early :)

So, if they need a volunteer.....

If they base it on status then I might be switching a few flights to QFF ...

The cynic in me says the A...'s haven't had many accidents as they arrive at the scene much later than the Boeing a/c :!: ... about 10% slower actually.

Also don't forget the A320 which has had some accidents. The classic being the demonstration when it flew into the trees on a low flypast.

Actually, no accidents or fatilities (yet) with the B777. Newer model airplanes are (naturally) rated safer then older models. The accident rate for boeing vs airbus is similar when all is taken into account.

There have been some collisions on the ground etc, but no fatalities to passengers. Skyring may have been thinking of the refueller that got incinerated during a refuelling accident.

Yeah right as if....the only thing Qantas has ever given away is a homing pigeon and a boomerang!
