Fly Ahead on Qantas

Just a note YMMV, I entered Syd J lounge on Saturday morning, the bloke in front of me tried to fly ahead and they refused. He said he usually has the app offer it and they said unless you're in a flex fare it's a no.
The international arrivals was hectic though with lots of pax being shuffled for missed connections which might have done it.
The transfer people for int->dom can perform all kinds of magic.
If you're just on a dom flight - then Qantas have to have enabled it for it to be in the app. It's often for weather or other operational reasons when they do it.

They're amazing! I don't think I've failed once in my request for flying ahead there (n=5ish) in recent times. The best one was being moved onto an earlier SYD-ADL with 40min prior to departure (HLO).

My friend (SG) had a SIN-SYD-ADL-ASP itinerary in Y last year, and they managed to book him on the SYD-ASP direct flight without blinking an eye.

The QF485 is the 1845 service, delayed until 2000.

The 493 is scheduled to depart at 2000 and is currently on time.

Both those options will end up leaving 2 hours earlier than your current 2200.
Looks like QF493 ended up earlier than QF485

Any other data points on attempting to move to an earlier (domestic) flight without either 1) being on flexi fare; 2) adverse weather or other IRROPS; or 3) connecting from int'l to domestic?

We (1x WP and 2x SG, on 2 separate bookings) are on the 6.40pm SYD-ADL today and wondering what our chances would be of getting on the 5.40pm flight instead? Both fairly lightly booked.

I'm no great fan of the SYD lounges so my instinct is not to bother trying to turn up early enough to keep that option open. Any thoughts?

Check your Qantas app from about 3hrs before, sometimes the option to fly earlier will appear if QF wants to get you moving.

Just check the app regularly during the day. It can show up on the app. Previously it was a lot more common but it still shows up regularly enough.

I didn't try, but now I wish I had - the 7:40pm flight (an hour after hours) just got cancelled and they have pushed our flight back to 7:30, presumably so they could accommodate the pax from that one.

Both were fairly lightly loaded - prob around 50% each - so I can't help but be suspicious that this was a tactical cancellation rather than for technical or other reasons.
