I thought I'd start a thread for us to list flights we tried to get on Qantas but weren't available due to route changes which have caused a loss in revenue to Qantas

If you tried to go somewhere with Qantas but discovered they don't fly there then post here.

I'll start off with a trip next week from Perth to Surabaya in J. Qantas can't get me there so I'm going with SQ in J. I tried to stay with OneWorld but the CX flight via Hong Kong was way more expensive.
Lost revenue - a few thousand $

I'm fairly sure QF wouldn't have dumped a route if it was profitable.
A 3/4-empty QF flight is still going to loose money even if you're flying J.

But what were the loads out of PER when the final SIN flights got dumped. I'd doubt the average loads for QF were 25% (I do believe this information was publicly available).

I should have said that my 25% figure was mere speculation. Irrespective of what the actual figure was, they must not have been profitable.

Even if they where making a profit out of PER, that doesn't mean that they should maintain a route. Let's say they assign a plane to do PER-SIN and they get $10,000 average profit per flight for doing that flight, what if they where to move that plane to a SYD-HNL and where able to get $11,000, would it make sense keeping it on the PER route which ultimately earned them less just to keep PER happy.

What if they have looked at their sums and realised that despite the fact that moving the flight away from PER it would mean that they would lose PER customers, they more than made up for it by flying SIN-BNE. Loads on a single flight tells you nothing, even loads across a single route tells you nothing, to determine the best placement for the equipment they need to look at a whole fleet and route structure across hundreds of variables, including

- Expected utilisation of the route (aka how many bums in seats can the airline get on the route)
- Expected pax flow on advantages
- Expected pax feeder advantages
- Cost of Fuel at Airport (not all airports sell fuel at the same price)
- Landing / Take off Fees
- Airport Infrastructure costs (eg the cost of utilizing checkin desks / gates / lounges at the chosen airport)
- Ground Staff costs (eg the cost of having ground staff at a location / outsourcing costs to a 3rd party contractor)
- Risks such as weather
- Fleet utilization (aka what routes will keep the fleet in the air for the most hours per day, this is also determining appropriate aircraft choices for the selected routes, and what routes the plane can do afterwards)
- Maintenance positioning and schedule
- Competition from other airlines and what advantages they may have over yourself.

I stopped at 11, but I could easily keep going...

To be fair, Qantas hasn't flown to SUB in at least the last 15+ years (if ever?). So they could never have got you there. From PER at different points in time you could have reached as close as CGK or DPS on QF, but more recently only as close as SIN.

I can't fly QF from Julia Creek in Qld to Timbuktu in Mali. Think of the revenue QF is losing!!!!!

To keep this on point:

Mauritius.

QF SYD>JNB then had to back track towards Australia with BA JNB>MRU.

BA (Operated by ComAir) flight is only once a week leaving very limited flexibility

ADL to KUL unless I go with partner MH.
ADL to HKG unless I go with partner CX.
ADL to KCH or BWN or BKI or MAN or BKK unless partnering, just like PER...
ADL to any international port unless I fly a partner, with lower earning rates.

QF flew to SUB as part of its first service to SIN 76 years ago.

ADL CNS
ADL BME
ADL HTI
ADL OOL
ADL HBA

These are routes that would not warrant daily frequency but weekly at least would be good. Instead it's either JQ or connect.

Are we really knocking QF for not having direct flights to Mauritius?

I've just been working in Kokstad in rural South Africa so I guess I should be criticizing QF for not having a daily 747 flight to their regional airport...

Daytime flights from Asia.
No way will we do short overnight final legs with SQ now firmly entrenched in our household for Asia with the end of MASA's. Surely those on business (ones I know at least do) these days stay and socialise to build relations before returning home.

Couldn't get there:

Direct
On those dates
At the right price
With available reward seats

Are all relevant distinctions within this question.

Eg. I didn't choose QF for an LHR trip despite QF having a route there.

Internationally, QF's route network is now so restricted you don't even need to consult a network map, let alone regret the fact that Qantas don't fly there. Codeshares? Forget it, they're generally more trouble than the excess fare over the operating carrier is worth. Personally, there's no way I'd consider JQi whatever variant of the franchise might serve the destination; I wouldn't even consider looking at their network in the first place.

Domestic, some interesting re-introductions of routes which I guess is result of downsizing of the fleet to standardize on the 737 for the vast majority of the flying gives QF flexibility out of peak hours, plus of course the various franchises/subsiduaries.

Personally, I'd like to see a return to MEL-OOL direct but whilst folks like me are prepared to fly via SYD or use BNE and the vast majority will frequent JQ, then I can't see that happening.

BD

Pretty much any Australian Capital City to any Tier 1 Mainland China City

What do people not get? QF are not a charity or a government run airline. Most reasonable sized cities are well served in terms of air services - just not by Qantas. Even ADL has a range of options - 3 of which allow
QF points and status accrual and benefits. There is loads of choice, it's not as if PER and ADL are relying on QF as the only way for them to access the world.

In the US there are cities with metro area populations twice to three times that of ADL that simply don't have international services (apart from short hops to YYZ or charters to Cancun). On any carrier, let alone a national or preferred carrier.

I think that's pretty much the crux of it, we're actually very well served by air travel (across all carriers). It is cheap, reliable, safe, quick, frequent and they still treat you like humans here rather than simply self loading freight. Of course we always want more more more.
