Here's a poll for you.

With all of the upgrade credits / points that we have, do you use them for work related travel, or save them up for leisure related travel ?

The way that I see it is, there are some companies that stipulate you MUST use any FF points accrued through work travel for future work travel, and then, some companies just don't care.

I know that some people take the view of "I'm not upgrading for work travel", because they want to enjoy business class on their holidays, hence, some people would see it as a 'waste' of their own personal points stash. Others would take the same view with award flights for business.

I'd like to know who uses their bank for what - work or leisure ?

Do you use your upgrades for leisure, taking in as much of those fine wines as you can in J, whilst thinking "Stuff upgrading for 'work' travel " ?

Or do you use your upgrades to go from an economy to business, because your company has sent you on economy class, and you want to fly business ?

Personally, I use U/G's as appropriate to the length of sector, time of day, meals served and availability, and not whether it is work or leoisre ( for example - regardless of whether business or leisure I think using U/G's on a evening flight to SIN is debatable, as you get to SIN and go to bed, but coming back on the overnight flight to OZ, it is much more desirabe)

I take it we're talking SIN-SYD or SIN-MEL here ?

I've just flown SIN-PER, and that was only 3 hours or so. I'd personally use the upgrades on long hauls, so that you get more time in the nicer cabins up front :D

MEL-SIN (dep 4pm arr 9pm - bearable in Y), but SIN-MEL (9pm dep 5am ar - better in J)

Just about anything internal is manageable without an upgrade. Beyond that I think you need to use the credits :!: Doesn'y really matter who's paying as it really is a matter of personal comfort. 8)

If I have upgrade credits due to expire I'll use them wherever I can short or long haul, business or leisure

I'll use them on both, with a minimum proviso that the sector must be longer than 2 hours and generally speaking I'll use them more for the return journey thatn the onward. So domestically I'd choose (interchangeable) BNE/CNS, BNE/MEL, BNE/ADL, BNE/PER, SYD/PER and SYD/MEL etc.

Long haul I'll put them towards (select any of the following) BNE, SYD or MEL to (select any of the following) LAX, SIN, HKG, BKK, LHR, FRA etc.

To me Intl is definitely the mose efficient use of points (just look atthe differential in ticket cost) - as I said initially to Clifford when I joined, I used 330,000 for a J RTW and this was why I was saving the majority of my points, for use every two years. Of course, marriage can exacerbate the need to earn twice as many... love you honey

Post 1 January 2004 (with the changes), I think I'll be saving them for long-haul upgrades (assuming I can get them!!). I think they are better value than for getting the Y seat Award.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Surely the use of points for long-haul upgrades is not that effective. Take a return to LHR. A J class redemption = 220,000 pts (if you can get one) To upgrade from disc Y --> J will be 180,000 return. So, you save 40,000 points but spend close to $2K in the process.

At least you can waitlist for an upgrade, you can't waitlist for an award booking. So if you have to travel at short notice (say, 4 weeks) you can still purchase your discount Y and waitlist for the U class, you would stand no chance of getting the award booking.

Dajop, true your have to pay $2K for a ticket, but there are lots more seats available in Y paid than Y Award. I would always consider that I am a better bet getting a J upgrade using points or tier credits simply because of my status. Now, I'm also lucky that I do lots of travel (both work and pleasure) and for a number of reasons can afford not to have to purchase deep discount tickets.

I make use of bonus points and purchasing everything I can through my crds then pay it off. Sometimes I use balance transfers. I know there are a lot out there who strive simply for a J upgrade once a year, whereas I have the capacity to earn 200-250K through cards and 75K through flying.

HELP please.

Somewhere on one of these posts there is a link to a seat allocation site and I can't find it.

Can someone please point me in the right direction :?:
