Hi Everyone,

Just wondering what my options are for flights to Israel from bangkok. I'm looking at late January?

Thanks.

No I am seious. Are there any direct flights or will I be having to go via europe? If I go via europe what are my options?

Turkish Airlines may be cheapest with 1 stop.

How have you managed to find a FF website but not been able to find an internet travel website?

No cheap option I could find. I wanted to visit Israle about a month ago as I was visiting India (not too far from India I thought).

The only airline I could find is El Al which has a Bangkok - Mumbai - Tel Aviv service, however they seem to keep it fairly secret as you can't even book it from their web site. I e-mailed their Mumbai office & go no reply. I phoned them and they gave me a price of about A$1200 per person Mumbai to Tel Aviv return.

At that price they can go jump, I gave up.... probably won't get to Israel it is just too expensive unless you are in Europe or the US. They don't seem very interested in tourists from this direction, with no connections to Singapore etc.

It's a real cough getting to Tel Aviv, and as Soundguy pointed out - El Al don't make it easy to book their services via the web.

My best result was to fly QF to Hong Kong and pick up El Al from there direct to Ben Gurion. The return was El Al to Bangkok and then home on QF again. That was a few years ago. When I tried to arrange a similar routing for this Saturday's trip my Agent told me she couldn't get any flights via Asia.

In the end I am going QF1 all the way to LHR, and then picking up BA back to Tel Aviv. 30 fecking hours!

At least the return is Tel Aviv > Bangkok > Sydney .... a much more respectable 20 hours.

But if you are booking for January then you should be able to put together a QF + El Al fare via Asia. You may have to get hold of a specialist Israeli TA.

Thanks everyone for your replies and experiences - it doesn't sound very promising from Bangkok!

Welcome to AFF delsbells :)

If you have enough points I'd look at using them. As you note there aren't many options from this direction and they're expensive, so points can be good value.

Another idea is to buy a round the world ticket (RTW) - probably costs about the same or less than a round trip ticket to Israel but you get all the extra flights included also. Eg on star alliance you could go BKK-VIE/FRA-TLV (Frankfurt is better option since LH treats TLV as longhaul but OS treats it as shorthaul), or on one world you could go BKK-LHR-TLV.

I've booked to fly from Mel to TLV via Hong Kong next month, but I used points for the El Al return leg. I can't be done over the net, but my travel agent did it for me, so there will be the QF assisted booking fee as well. As noted above, you can use QF points to redeem a ticket on El Al. You can also accrue QF points when you fly El Al. If you fly to Hong Kong on Qantas, you'll have a full day layover in Hong Kong on the way over, and a few hours on the way back (if you fly back on the flight to Sydney - and then connect to anywhere else)
