Afternoon,

Im booking a flight to LHR late March returning Mid April. I can book with Qantas PER-SIN-LHR return for 2 pax @ $15197 in J, or Jakarta -LHR via SIN for $9032 for 2 pax, ok Jakarta to SIN is on a SQ flight ( J) it's not gonna cost us $6165 to get to Jakarta.from PER....

A flight from Perth to Jakarta is only $952 return for 2 pax Via SIN, so could book the flight to Jakarta but stay in SIN and catch the flight from there. PER to SIN economy cost $1001 per pax with Qantas !!

Rip off !

If you booked it a month or so back you could have got 2 pax ex PER to LHR in J for 7500 with Qantas during their 2 for 1 sale, comparing fares from one country to another is never going to be equitable or fair!

I believe standard practice is to cancel a booking if you don't turn up for the first flight. So I doubt you would be able to stay in SIN as you suggest. Do a no show and there will probably be no flight for you to catch SIN-LHR.

Similar with SYD-NAN-LAX-NAN-SYD, for June/July QF (Aus site) quote over 15k for the ticket
However if it is split SYD-NAN-SYD (Aus site) and NAN-LAX-NAN (Fiji site) the price can be reduced to around 4.5k

Finnair business class return from Bangkok to London via Helsinki is $3k. Updated product with fully flat beds nowadays too.

Go Deathstar Halfclass on a daytime flight from Australia to Bangkok, and then get yourself a flat bed via QF JASA on the overnight return.

You could do PER-BKK-LHR return for around $2.5K in J TG using US DM award :D but that's another story.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It just proves that but looking around at options from other countries eg Asia/Europe/Asia return fares & piggy backing it onto an Oz/Asia/Oz ticket sometimes lets you save a bundle.

I would however always overnight in Asia on the way out to avoid the problem of a possible missed connection when you are on two totally separate bookings/tickets. In some cases though you may still be able to through check bags when on different bookings eg JQ MEL/BKK then QF BKK/LHR.

There's no point getting cut up over why tickets are much more expensive from Oz than other places, just use that knowledge & work the system.

The AY J option of $3K return ex Asia to Europe via HEL sounds good particularly if you're chasing OW points. To get to Asia ex Oz you could get a package deal with 6 nights accommodation which you may be able to split into 3 nights on the way over and 3 on the way back.

We all know about the cheap fares ex TPE in J on CX. I haven't yet priced a TPE/HKG/LHR return though but it might be worth a look.

Correct. If you miss a sector the rest of the booking gets cancelled. So one couldn't book CGK-SIN-LHR and pick it up in SIN as the booking would get cancelled for being a no-show in CGK.

Thanks ozbeachbabe ... there's food for thought. A couple of random dates in February and March came back with a return J fare of TWD 107,799 = $3,628.

And these discounts generally only apply to overpriced premium airfares from Australia.

I do not believe one can get significant savings purchasing economy airfares from Australia to somewhere in Asia and then purchasing separate airfares from Asia to Europe.

The OP was referring to Business class travel. Saving's can be made economy but are not as significant.

e.g. TPE-LHR can be had on CX in Business Class for ~AUD3600.

TPE-SYD can be had in Business Class for ~AUD2500

So ~AUD6100 + initial TPE positioning can get SYD-LHR in business class and for that matter earn maybe 720 SC's.

Currently QF have a sale with direct SYD-LHR for $8100; 480 SC's.

Yes the OP was talking about business class but then switched over to economy fares for PER-Asia, which seemed to be part of the reasoning for declaring a rip off. I'm slightly confused by that.

There are a few things the OP mentions

One is the difference of the J seats between CGK and PER with the destination being LHR, and the other being that PER-SIN-CGK is cheaper than PER-SIN alone.

All I can say is welcome to the world of airline economics. The example you mention is not the only time where X->Y->Z is cheaper than X->Y. Someone with more knowledge can elaborate on why this is the case. There was a case of SYD-PER-PHE costing $23 (mistake fare), where as the normal SYD-PER fare was the normal $200+ (The person who found this only did the SYD-PER leg). The other thing being flights ex-AU are generally more expensive, due to what airlines feel they can charge in this market.

If you do want to do PER-SIN-(CGK)-SIN-LHR on 2 separate tickets, make sure that you do leave enough time if things do go wrong getting there.

It can be frustrating for the passenger.

"With the rise of the Internet and the growth of low fare airlines, airfare pricing transparency has become far more pronounced. Passengers discovered it is quite easy to compare fares across different flights or different airlines. This helped put pressure on airlines to lower fares. Meanwhile, in the recession following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S., business travellers and corporate buyers made it clear to airlines that they were not going to be buying air travel at rates high enough to subsidize lower fares for non-business travellers. This prediction has come true, as vast numbers of business travellers are buying airfares only in economy class for business travel."

I agree with wholeheartedly!! ( para phrased from above wiki link)

I don't get the outrage...

Different markets will always result in different prices. Sometimes it's bad for "us" (airfares ex-UK) and sometimes it isn't (want to pay UK petrol prices???)

So.. just take advantage of the good deals however one can... like C fares ex-Asia (as many of us around here clearly also do)..just common sense...
