PLEASE INCLUDE DATE, FLIGHT NUMBER, ORIGIN & DESTINATION IN ALL REQUESTS
>>>> ADDED BY ADMIN (6 Sept 2010) <<<<

Background to this thread
We have noticed an increase in the posting of questions about seat availability on specific flights. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with specific questions about availability on specific flights. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.
We have therefore created this new consolidated thread where you can ask questions about seat availability on specific flights. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve useability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread
Please post questions about availability of specific flights or upgrade probability in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, date, origin and destination and any other relevant detail.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

Thanks!

See this thread for hints on how to read loadings:

If looking for, say Qantas points upgrades, look for A class for First, mid to high D or any I class for Business and any R for Premium Economy.

Look for the most expensive category of the cabin YOU are currently booked in as being sold out e.g. J0 to first, W0 to Business & Y0 to PE for increased op-up chances. Also, look for availability on the discount premium buckets (A, P, I, D, U, T & Z inventories).

Conversely, look for high numbers in the discount economy buckets (N, O, Q, E & X inventories) for reduced op-up chances.

Seat maps can be a VERY rough guide but note that just because a seat is not showing as allocated does not mean that seat hasn't been sold. Not everyone pre-selects seats.

  • Is it sensible for me to wait a couple of days to see if classic award availability opens up (i.e. after the QF Australia sale goes away)? If so, how long should I wait before I book something else?
  • At present I see I could book the above itinerary for ~70,000 points as a pure points (i.e. non-classic) redemption. This doesn't seem like a particularly good use of points as the flights could be booked right now for ~$400 cash. Is my calculation correct here?
  • An option I am considering is to simply have her fly Virgin flights departing at roughly the same time as there's plenty of classic economy award availability there.
Qantas tend not to release more award availability closer in. There are some exceptions (they were doing a bit of it on their international flights in early Feb), but they aren't like other airlines that routinely release a lot of close-in awards. That's especially the case with domestic flights, because late bookers tend to be business travellers, who are able to pay higher, not lower, prices.

You're correct that points plus pay is a terrible redemption. I wouldn't redeem 70K points for $400.

Can both of you fly on Virgin if there's plenty of availability?

Can both of you fly on Virgin if there's plenty of availability?
There's a couple of issues I have with going the Virgin route all the way through:
  • Qantas has the latest departure time out of SYD for HBA @ 19:20 versus 17:50 for Virgin which for both of us just makes the most sense
  • The pain (and expense) of having to cancel my BA Avios award for the outbound segment
I'm now thinking of maybe buying the QF outbound as a cash fare then using Virgin points to bring myself and my partner back to SYD which given the on time performance of JQ may be a sensible option.

Looking for availability for 1k sin>Syd 23rd April
Are you referring to business class (i.e. J)?

In any event, here are the current loadings per ExpertFlyer on that date for that route:

To get a classic business award you need to have U be a positive value (i.e. greater than 0) which we can clearly see is not the case for either flight. The earlier flight on the A380 is show J9 C9, D0, I0 which means there are at least 9 tickets available as a full fare business ticket, 9 tickets currently available as a slightly discounted Clipper Class business class ticket, but no discount business class tickets available (D0, I0). It's a similar story for QF82 as well. In terms of likelihood QF releases classic award space, it's possible, but I wouldn't place a bet on it.
