First Time Upgrade on United - How?

Hi there!
My workplace has booked me a United airlines economy ticket (S class I think I saw?) to Fort Lauderdale and I'm looking at upgrading to business class for the first 16hr flight. Bit of a rookie over here, never tried to upgrade before, tried to find some information on my booking but it says no upgrades are available even though I can see empty business seats on the seat map. Is this due to the waitlist system I've read about? Any help or tips for upgrading are much appreciated!
Thank you :)

Unless you're answering yes to the questions above you're probably travelling in the middle seat of the back row. :(
Except, you should at least be able to “upgrade” to Economy+ (extra legroom seating) for a paid fee just through the online seat selection.

I had a quick search and nothing leapt out but I believe UA do offer paid upgrades at checkin. But in the current era of full / oversold flights those are probably quite rare and maybe not even great value either.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Possibly worth a read:

So, how do you want to upgrade your seat to business class?
Firstly, is S class even upgradable?

Are you a member of https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/mileageplus.html ? A member with Premier status, and lots of points?

Unless you're answering yes to the questions above you're probably travelling in the middle seat of the back row. :(
Thanks for your reply!
I've actually just found on the site that I can upgrade with 30k miles + $600usd. I've only got 2000 miles so might need to try and buy some more. But seeing as this is an option for my booking, I think the s class is upgradeable! Is this the general way to upgrade?

I am a mileage-plus member but not premier status, I've only flown once with united, and I"m constantly flying on different airlines that are company booked so I've got several memberships across airlines like qantas, singapore air, american airlines.

Thanks

Do you have status with any other airline? If so, it might be very much worth your while to try this:

Otherwise, I believe there’s currently a bonus points offer when purchasing UA points - so how’s a relatively good time (plus the AUD is up a tad).

I've got about 1 economy international flight on each rewards program (only a few thousand points/miles) in Singapore Krisflyer, Qantas/American Airlines. Just had look at trying to add them to my united account but they don't seem to be options for any of those airlines, unfortunately. Thanks for the info!

You might want to look into consolidating your loyalty program memberships, focusing on one Oneworld program (eg Qantas Frequent Flyer OR American Airlines AAdvantage) and one Star Alliance program (either United MileagePlus or Singapore KrisFlyer).

You could also credit United and Singapore Airlines flights to Virgin Australia Velocity as they are all partners.

You can credit flights on any airline within a given alliance to any other airline in that alliance, assuming the fare class is eligible for earning.

I had trouble recently transferring points because I couldn't see the correct airline in the transfer drop down menu. Turns out I first had to go into my profile to add the airline membership there. After I had done that, the transfer drop down menu displayed correctly. (In fact I'm sitting in the VA lounge right now about to board the flight I booked with points transferred from different Star A airlines).

Which *A programs were you able to consolidate? I thought VA <-> SQ was the only such direct arrangement.

Some I had earned on UA but maybe under my KF number?? Others I earned flying SQ.

Yes, that would make sense if you were just using KF for all *A flying (as per @Mattg 's comment earlier). I was hoping you'd found some majic loophole that I could consolodaye some residual odds and sods FF points!

Of course, if someone based on Oz was flying VA, SQ and UA, consolidating points and SCs in VFF would make a lot of sense for many. That was my approach when NZ was in play and I was doing some back and fourth to NZ but Euro long haul in SQ or EY.

I credit to KF because *A status is more useful to me than VA status. But I couldn't find any available reward seats via KF so transferred points to VA and hey presto found a seat.

Having upgraded international segments using points on United, I think I am qualified to answer here. In general for United, so long as you are not booked into Basic Economy or are travelling on an award ticket, yes you can upgrade with miles. The number of miles required and whether you end up paying a cash co-pay for the upgrade depends on where you are travelling to and the fare class you are booked into. To give you a specific example, in 2020 I booked a $900 USD return flight: London Heathrow to Sydney (via Los Angeles) which ticketed as a deep discount (but not basic economy) flight into K class (the lowest fare class United has). I was able to then request an upgrade to Polaris business class for 35,000 miles + $650 co-pay (my status at the time was Premier Gold BTW so by no means top tier elite or anything crazy). The upgrades themselves cleared at check-in, which IMHO represents decent value for United Miles. The S fare class is similar to my K class (albeit slightly more pricier)

To your point about holding elite (Premier) status, it won't impact your ability to request an upgrade. Where elite status does play a role is in prioritizing who gets upgraded. For instance, suppose there are only 8 business class seats available when United starts processing upgrades but there are 20 people requesting an upgrade. Well, first they will begin by prioritizing those who bought an expensive fare (i.e. full Y fare or Premium Economy), then for each fare code (i.e. Economy S) they will prioritize by Elite status, so 1Ks will be ahead of those with Premier Gold versus those with no status. There are some other factors outside your control such as whether your organization has a commercial contract with United, that are also taken into account too. Hence, the best way to increase your chances would be to book flights that have a high number of business class availability from the outset (i.e. 20+ seats available at booking), increase the fare you are travelling on (via a GG BUYUP), and of course earning higher elite status. None of these by the way are a guarantee your upgrade will clear, you are rolling the dice at every point.

What happens if your upgrade doesn't clear? No worries, your points and co-pay are refunded! What if your flight does upgrade? Well, you'll travel in a higher class of service (i.e. Polaris), have access to the United Clubs and Polaris lounges en-route, and for elite members earn valuable PQPs (based on how much $$$ you spent on the co-pay) towards earning elite status. Is it worth upgrading to Premium Plus (United's Premium Economy)? No! Having flown them a number of times you would be better off sitting in an over-wing emergency exit row which boasts 50+ inches of pitch!

By the way, using points to upgrade is just one method United provides you. They also offer upgrade offers right now when you go into Manage My Booking for your flight. Sometimes these offers can be very appealing (i.e. once I had a $900 offer to upgrade my dirt cheap K fare to Polaris for Auckland to San Francisco)

Hope this discussion provides marginal benefit!

Not sure if anyone has mentiond already but you can shortcut yourself to Gold status using the new HSBC Star Alliance credit card - you need to hit a minimum spend and then you can choose which airline you want the gold to. From there you should be able to get slightly ahead of the upgrade cue - gold status doesn't get you anywhere close to front of the line but it will help.

On the points note, i'm not sure if buying 30K miles is worth the $ - hopefully someone else will chime in on that.
