So for my first time flying Rex (from PER to ALH) I was due to leave at 7:10 PM, about an hour after it was due to depart we were informed the flight would be rescheduled to 7:30 AM the following day due to the inbound plane breaking down and having to bring a standby plane into operation.

Luckily my accommodation in the destination let me change my 2 night booking to a 1 night booking with minimal fuss despite missing the change and cancellation windows.

Not a great first experience, but I can understand it is a once off. My return flight was also delayed an hour with apparently no explanation, which is apparently normal for Rex?

That's not good. That delay would lead me to consider just driving down.
Well I don't own a car, but I was weighing up flying with catching the bus and the bus would have definitely been quicker

Rex has good deals ADL to MEL. Your experience does put me off booking with them, at least with Jetstar cancellations, they put you on Qantas.

It’s happening all over the place :( Friend flying back to SYD from MEL on Sunday night had their flight cancelled and the next available was via Hobart, arriving 25 hours later! Flying weekly, not a single SYD-MEL-SYD flight has been on time in the last five weeks on a friday outbound, sunday return. Not a single flight. Delays range from 30 minutes up to two hours. And that’s across Rex, Virgin and Qantas.
