First Qantas A220 revealed

Yesterday I slightly rerouted a trip via CBR to fly the A220 for a bit of fun, only telling people on here because in the real world most would not understand

QF6126 CBR-MEL A220 VH-X4B The Redtailed A220 is flying today. From what I understand this is a test flight but some QF ground staff from CBR are selected to go on this.

With months/years of speculation surrounding the QF (Link) A220 now over, the focus is starting to shift to the A321XLR interiors and specifically two factors; lie-flat seats and IFE.

It’s safe to say the former is impossible without the latter, but if they don’t go for lie-flat seats in J then IFE on the A321XLRs is simply not guaranteed since QF have opted not to install IFE screens on an IFE-appropriate aircraft (A220) and it may set a precedent. While it’s obvious and certain that the 321XLRs will have fast and free wifi I am disappointed by the fact that I can’t bank on them having IFE screens.

That may be true but to have a ‘premium cabin’ nowadays IFE is a must regardless of whether the plane has Wifi or not. And the A220 and A321XLRs are not purely domestic jets, Qantas has signalled that the A220 will operate short-haul international flights in the not so distant future where it will be up against the likes of SQ’s 737MAX and NZ’s A320neo which are fully equipped with seatback screens. The A321XLR will go even further.

I don't believe QLink operate any international flights currently and I doubt that'll change. More than likely there will be a QF mainline configured and painted A220.

QLink operate quite a few international flights these days to destinations in NZ, East Timor and the Solomon Islands and they’re flying to Singapore soon (starting 9 December). Not sure what year you are living in.

QF have the golden handcuffs to compensate the lack of IFE in premium cabins against SQ and NZ.
Don't underestimate that factor.

Regarding domestic only, VA it's byo tablet in biz & works well.

No Airlines is going to have exact same specs so always pax can make the choice.

QF likes to follow AA things (gee, I wonder who could possibly have influence there....)

Shame when a LCC like air Baltic has it. I thought it was a great feature to have. It showed the safety demonstration and then the in-flight map. Feel like another missed opportunity by qf

The Qantaslink planes the A220 is replacing didn't have seat back IFE so no loss IMO. If there is wifi almost everyone will have a phone, tablet or laptop of their own to stream content, or will have downloaded it beforehand.

The larger overhead bin space is the bigger win.

Of course it works well…it’s VA, who are a mid-tier short-haul airline situated somewhere between a ULCC and a full service airline.
