First Overseas Trip

Tasmania in 1978 whilst still at school. Hadn't even seen the map at that stage of life. ;)

Hong Kong in 1992, flying into Kai Tak was awesome.

Rarotonga in the Cook Islands in 1987. AirNZ 767 broke on the way in AKL so we got there very late at night.

To France on a student exchange in 1990 over Christmas. Flights was an AZ 747-200 MEL-BKK(the old one obviously)-FCOxCDG. We then caught the TGV to Le Mans, which was a thrill. I remember I had never seen so much Toblerone (in airport duty free). The total journey was about 35 hours and I was almost zombie like by the time I met my host family.

My first planned overseas trip was to the USA on board Freddie Laker airways... Didn't happen they went to the wall

My first overseas trip was a short Pacific Island cruise on P&O's Himalaya with my father in the late 60's. I was 13 years old and from memory the ports were Suva Fiji, Pago Pago American Samoa, and Noumea New Caledonia. We hit a hurricane they took the stabilisers off and I was seasick for most of the trip.
My first flight overseas wasn't until 1986, four couples went on their first OS trip to Bangkok, Pattaya & Singapore. We flew Thai airways, I remember going through customs at Bangkok airport and there were young soldiers with rifles lined up against the wall. It was a huge culture shock for us back then.

This is my first post, I am working my way through the AFF site , there is so much information I think it will take me a while to get my head around it.

Thank you to all the very helpful posters, I never thought it possible to fly Business class until I stumbled upon AFF

1970 Family holiday to Fiji, Mum Dad and Three kids - I was 5, they left my younger brother at home with Gran - he was only 12 months old !! We all went back 10 years later with Mum Dad and the 6 of us. This is us leaving Suva, mum in the red dress and my brother and sister. The days when people dressed up to fly.

Plenty of great trips since

Took my first flight in early 1982 when I moved to Australia as a toddler. I can't remember that flight though. It took me another 18 years, in the year 2000, to take my first overseas flight (Singapore and Hong Kong).

Alanslegal that might be the longest time from first to second overseas trip! 18 years, I wonder if anyone on AFF took so long ðŸ

;) Yeah unfortunately our family came to Australia with nothing, other than the clothes on our backs. Mum and dad worked their bottoms off - doing labouring jobs / sometimes two or more jobs that nobody wanted - so the five of us kids could go to school, complete university, and make the most of the opportunity that we got - in this lucky country. Dad bought a brand new VN Commodore in 1988 and we did a few long road trips around Australia, apparently Commodores were fashionably back then. Road trips was all we could afford - and flying around the world with 5 children in tow, even if they could afford it - which they couldn't, was likely not going to be fun. My parents worked their butts off to ensure that we are where we are today, so I am very grateful for that. Nowadays, we offer to repay them by letting them go Wherever they want, Whenever they want - on the kid's money. Of course, they stubbornly refuse to do so.

Is Tasmania classed as overseas? Did go on a school trip there when I was in Year 11 a year or so back (who's going to argue with my maths????)
