I have used the F lounge in Melbourne on numerous occasions ( and found it to be excellent).
On my next trip to LHR, I am flying via Sydney (QF1) as the re were insufficient seats on QF 9 from Melbourne.
My wife and I are flying First, but our 3 children ( 10 - 18 year old) are in economy ( they have no status).
Questions:
Is Sydney F lounge similar in standard to Melbourne F lounge?
I know theoretically we can only bring 2 visitors into the F lounge - do people think they will allow all of our kids into the lounge?

Almost certainly they'll allow it.

Almost certainly they'll allow it.

I have taken wife and two kids in (me platinum only) whilst travelling in business class, and the family was very warmly received.

I have not used Melbourne, but as for the Sydney Flounge: best in the world :)

As someone who has used both I prefer MEL because it is smaller but SYD is just as good. They are both of the same very high standard.

Yes, same standard, pretty much the same menu. Main difference is that SYD is substantially bigger and has better views.

Both are good, SYD has better views, well because there is water next to the airport and it is closer to the runway, and the CBD. But it does lack the intimacy you might be used to at MEL and probably will be busier and noisier. I'll probably be shot down for saying this, but IMHO, MEL dining area feels more restaurant like, whereas as the SYD dining area feels more like a busy cafe in atmosphere, but the food is more or less the same.

No problem with getting your kids in. Entirely within QF rules. Each F pax is entitled to one guest and kids under 18 (up to two per pax) don't count towards that.
Going against the grain here but I actually prefer the SYD lounge.
Can't quite put my finger on it but it's certainly a much more impressive space.

I also prefer SYD as to me it feels lighter and airier than MEL.

My vote is for the MEL lounge. In SYD I had to eat my meal at a small coffee table with a stranger sitting in the chair directly in front of me facing me because the place was so full he had nowhere else to sit. Plus they didn't refill the bottled water in the fridge or self serve pastry tray the whole time I was there both of which had run out.

Syd F lounge gets my vote, I always get there early to have breakfast before it fills up. The ambience is buzzing (in a good way) and the views + size make it better than mel which whilst still good is too small.

Oh and the best part of this discussion, I'll be in the MEL lounge on Wednesday and the SYD lounge on Thursday.

MEL-AKL-SYD-LAX.

I much prefer the simpler and fairer MEL lounge.

Tough love on the kids too, I hope they don't roll jaffas down the aisle to you in F ;)

Thank you all for your responses.

Keeping the kids in the back is an active decision - I only flew economy until I was in my 30s. I don't think it will hurt them, and it's hard to get used to economy once you have " tasted" premium cabins. My 10 year old is often in F with us out of necessity ( when the 2 older children are not flying with us) as she is too young to fly alone in economy. As she is used to flying F, it is not a bad idea to bring her back down to earth...

My other question regarding our trip to Europe is where do we all check in from Melbourne? We usually use the international first check-in in Melbourne when flying QF9 to LHR. This time we are flying Mel - Syd (adults Business, and yes, kids in the back) on our first leg. Do we have to use the domestic terminal check-in in Melbourne or are we permitted to use the (very pleasant) first check-in and first lounge in the international terminal?

Sadly you use the domestic terminal intl check in area (to the left as you walk in the main doors)

Quite true. Views in SYD slightly better.

I've had only warm welcomes bring my wife and 3 kids into the F lounge.

As others have said, the lounges are on par with one another, though SYD is more spacious and has better views.

Agree with dajop, SYD, while good, has something of a Coles cafeteria feel about it whereas MEL does not. I've also been served entree and main concurrently at SYD.
