.... only BNE-AKL-BNE, booked with QFF points and as part of a trip to RAR.

It might only be 3 hours each way, but Mrs_O and I are pretty chuffed. The taxes/fines were the same as J and I had plenty of points so went for the F option. It will probably be the one and only time (x2 flights) :D:D:D.

You can say its a once in a lifetime, (return of course) now, but just you wait till you have a visit to the lounges and that 380 itself.
Bring along a digital camera that can do movies.
Beautiful.
There is the vibration and shuddering as the 380 takes off, but after that, you don't hear a lot of noise.
Ideally, the 2 in the middle is what they say for couples to take, as in seats, but shrewdly, I would put if you haven't made seat selections, one in the window seat, the other in the seat across.
And do visit the bar at the back of J, they do have canapes, that they don't bring along during the meal service, but you can wander during the flight, to the back and have an extra drink and a snack.
Drink the champers they provide before liftoff/take off, as they don't bring it back if you don't finish it before liftoff, they said they would bring my champers after liftoff, but they never did! I had only taken a sip, this was in J on return to MEL.
Believe you me, being able to see the banking turns, as well as watch the onboard camera, is a sight to behold.
I made the greatest mistake using my ipod to take pictures, then when I plugged the wire in to my laptop, an ios update was started, for which I didn't plan for, and didn't do any backup, so all my photos of my MEL - AKL in F, back in J all are now gone.
Watch for the smartgate that NZ uses on their exit, its changed, now you look at the facial recognition camera thats to the right, and not straight ahead as on entry to NZ, and entry to Aust.
I had my first 2 trips on the 380, one in F/one in J, now I can't make any more bookings trans Tasman in F!
Its a great trip, but don't say its your last! Or one and only.

The shower's listed max capacity is 2. I'm just sayin.... bwhahaha

(yeah, no...)

It's a pity the BNE F (QF) lounge is so poor but other than that I'm sure you'll enjoy the experiences.

I recommend ex-AKL the special canapes that are designed to go with the DP Rose only (they don't come unless you order that). Really yummy.

And AP, you know, if you wanted more Champagne, all one has to do is ask.... *smh*

I did AKL - SYD in J and thought that was really good.
You're going to have one hell of a time in F :p

LOL. Mrs_O thinks the shower is a silly idea, but I'm going to give it a go. I might take Master_O in with me too.

Yes, I have experienced the BNE 'F' lounge when I was WP, but we'll just go and use the EK lounge anyway.

Good tip, thanks :).

Absolutely agree the shower is Over The Top and specially on these short sectors why would you? (I don't bother myself, but only because I've done it on the long haul) and often it's not outright offered on trans-tasman (but I'm pretty sure they would be OK with it if you asked explaining your first time etc).

The thing is, it's there, and it's crazy but it's amazing too. Maybe not on a short sector, but near the end of a 14 hour long haul from DXB it was incredible. I actually got out on arrival and felt human going through customs and all that at 0600 and it was absolutely wonderful.

And hey, it's a rare bunch of flyers that can say they've done the shower thing at 39,000ft right? :D

so do enjoy if you get the chance :)

There is a 1 or 2 prawn (cooked) sitting in a small cup with mango purée in the bottom of the cup.
Interesting taste that one, tried it on the return to Aust.
Sure will book even a J return next time on my TT trips on the 380.
Not going back to the 737s, unless QF brings a 787 into the TT equation.

Doing the same myself Syd Akl in May. Did SQ suites last year Sydney to London so keen to see how Emirates measure up.

Having done SQ Suites recently myself I'll make a few comments, though I know this is a bit OT to this thread.

I would say both products have their advantages and disadvantages. Both are also what I would call "first generation A380 F" products - the SQ Suites, while recently refurbished a bit, are circa 2007 when th 380 was introduced, and the current EK F Suite is from 2008-09 (much like QF's F). Both EK and SQ are promising refreshes in the next year or two.

Having said that my general feeling is that -

SQ catering - most specially out of SIN probably beats EK's catering, plus SQ offers both Dom and Krug(if Champ is your thing). Having said that every EK flight I have had the wines in F have been sublime, and they do have the DP Rose, so I guess it's a bit of a toss up depending on personal tastes. The food though, I find mostly on the more bland side. Don't get me wrong it's delicious and of good quality (I feel ex-AKL is far better than ex-AU with ex-DXB better) but I think SQ meal service, choices and offerings are very nice (specially with Book the Cook in J and F). SQ catering has gone down a bit true, but it is still very very good.

Amenity kit - SQ superior - the bottles of aftershave, the sensational Givenchy PJ's etc are superior to EK (and none of this is offered trans-tasman on EK)

hardware - I think SQ's a bit more comfortable in either sitting and lying position; EK has the minibar which is handy (not that getting a drink is at all difficult of course, and EK has the full bar at the back of J on the 380 which is something else specially if travelling as a pair or group)

EK has the shower. No contest there vs. SQ.. plus Shower aside, those EK F lavs are *H U G E* with the flight map monitor in their, all kinds of accessories for peeps (hairdryers etc), the heated floor and they are always spotless thanks to the attendants. Sorry SQ but your lavs fail in comparision

I would say the area of the SQ suite seems bigger and perhaps also helped being in the lower forward zone A of the 380 vs upstairs on EK

Both are fine products... at the end of the day it probably comes down to individual crews for experiences and preferences for things like on board F&B, or if things like a shower or the bar are important or not.

If faced with the two for a long haul say AU-europe, I'd probably go with EK just for the comfort level, the shower and the bar down the back but I sure as heck wouldn't say no to doing Suites again :D

and of course you have EY Apartments, which is better again as a much newer product, but I've not tried that and can't see that I will any time soon sadly.

Anyway people's mileage will vary :)

I was having a look at one-way awards BKK-HKG for June 2016. It is quoted as 12,000 QFF points for economy, 24,000 QFF points for business and 36,000 QFF points for first.

I know it is not a lot of points but 3 times the cost of economy. Just staying....

And this

While you wont be given an amenity kit, there will be a stationery box in the drawer and the take out box of flight refreshment kit.

Cheaper to purchase IMHO. Some amazing sale fares out there from time to time
