Yes... It finally happened...

Went through the final Gate check at SIN for my CX flight to HKG in J.....and....

GA: "Oh Sir, are you travelling alone?"

Me: "Yes, I am as a matter of fact"

GA: "Im sorry but we are going to have to change your seating assignment"

Me: Jokingly... "No problem.. if you like you can move me ALL the way forward "

GA: "Sir, that is exactly what I have done, enjoy the flight"

Me:

I must report that seat 1K on CX's 744 is.......rather nice....

Weird... I am Gold Elite on NZ (*G)... Do I get an op-up on SQ on Saturday with a sold out Y cabin? Nope....

But as a QFF NB I get bumped to FIRST on CX??????

Well done Trooper !!

Shame it wasn't for a slightly longer sector but who cares - you were blessed by the upgrade gods.

Congratulations! CX only sporadically operate the 744 SIN-HKG (ie not every day of the week, and not every week) and it is the only aircraft they actually sell F seats on this route. So one read is that it makes such an upgrade less llikely, but the other is that most people don't think about buying F on this route on CX as it really restricts flexibility so therefore CX happily oversell J.

Think you might have hit the nail on the head there dajop!

I got the impression... with the "travelling alone" question, that the GA was trying to get some folks seated together... and if F is not a "usual" option on the route I can see how they might use that cabin as a handy spot to park folks when necessary...

The service was... no surprise... awesomely good (and much friendlier/less sycophantic than I feared)..as was the Food!! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!

Ate so well that on the next flight (HKG-ICN in J.. Sigh!) I didn't eat ANY of the offerings....

In the OZ Lounge now waiting on the flight to NRT... back on the *A!

P.S. Was trying to find which 330 the HKG-ICN was going to be.. hoping (faintly) that it would be the 33B with the herringbone seats... (It wasn't) AND I noticed in the Manage My Bookings area that the previous flight had me "confirmed" in F.... wonder if it will credit that way????

That'd make it perfect!

Congrats. If you are lucky, you won't be addicted to F ..... yet

Mrs! got op'ed at AKL this morning from Y to J on an award ticket :)

She's PG

Mr!

Congratulations trooper on your first op up!

Well, now you are competing against all the SQ elites (PPS Solitaire, PPS, KrisFlyer elites). After that, there must be a whole swathe of *Gs also on board.

Unless you could tell that some of the upgraded pax were *Gs or non-elites, then being *G on a carrier which doesn't match your FFP probably doesn't help a huge amount (except for perhaps a nice "welcome aboard" message from the senior FA / purser).

Now if you were on a NZ flight with a completely sold out Y, this situation would be quite different (as in I'd like to see how many GEs could there possibly be to bump you out of an op up).

Congrats trooper! :D

SQ is infamous for being extremely stingy with op ups, even more so than QF. "Protecting the integrity of our premium product" and what not. So not a surprise there. OTOH, CX is one of the more generous airlines.

Having said that, my first op up with SQ was from Y to J on a MEL-SIN as UA*G. Certain overseas ports are known to be far more lenient than their SIN counterparts.

A very nice op-up there trooper; do please confirm with me that the 744 F bathrooms did have two windows allowing natural light to come in ... or was I dreaming when I was there, once?

They do yes with photochromatic glass (as well as a shade).

Much nicer facilities than down the back of the bus ;)

My first op up on SQ was Y to J on a mere CGK-SIN flight last Dec, oddly enough it followed 5 days after my first QF upgrade in many years, which in turn was 4 days after my first upgrade on EK.

I'll have to post a mini TR when I get settled.. (In MEX at present waiting to board a flight to PHX)

YEs, the bathroom in F is HUGE... I was so gobsmacked I took a photo... which seems very odd behaviour to me!!!!

OT- If we can't send the boss from SYD to SIN/HKG or ICN to see a good airport could we at least send him/her to MEX!! Pretty bloody impressd with this place... EXCEPT getting caught out by the NO LIQUIDS AT ALL rule and having to dump all my handy travel sized toiletries....:(

What's this?

I was in MEX 6 weeks ago and did not have that issue.

Is this new?

Thanks for the info :p

I had the same reaction, I opened the bathroom door and it was like 'wwoah where's all that light coming in from?' and that's when I see windows  I had to go back to my little suite and bring out the p&s camera for a few snaps as well - the shots didn't turn out nicely unfortunately for some reason :(

Must be new serfty....

When I checked in the "line supervisor" (?) asked "Any liquids at all?".. but I assumed "any OTHER than the <100ml type"..

Should have listened more carefully but it was just after 5 AM.....

By the time I read the sign at security my checked bag was long gone of course......

BTW - The "payback" for the op-up on CX came when I arrived in NRT... to find that the UA flight I had carefully booked on (744 with new C product) was delayed so much I wasn't going to make my MEX connection... so they had rebooked me on the NRT-IAD flight which DID have a valid connection to a MEX flight... trouble is the UA 777's have NOT been refurbished.. and of course it was one of those to IAD...

Chiz chiz chiz say Molesworth.......... Ah well.. the seat was actually better than expected (it went pretty damn flat).. and the service/food was - somewhat surprisingly - very good... and remember I'd just done a series of flights on SQ/CX/OZ in C.... So well done UA...;)

Must have been just luck but I was given 9H... the famous "Row 9" with about 5' of legroom!
