Anyone flew QF127 SYD-HKG on a 747 lately? Booked two F seats on A380 and a Qantas rep called letting us know that the aircraft is now a 747. Was told that it's the refitted 747 with same seat as A380. I thought their refitted 747 doesn't have a first class?

When are you flying? F is being withdrawn from this route in the near future.

Thursday. We're aware A380 being withdrawn from this route and made sure we fly while they're still in service.

If it's still an F service it's going to be the old coughpy cabin - nothing like the A380.

Rotten luck.....

If it is a retrofitted 747 there will be no F class. If there is an F cabin it will be the older style, but it is still perfectly fine! Yes the IFE is a bit dated, but nothing really beats the nose of a 747 for privacy and quiet. But choose your seats carefully. 1A/K would be good as a couple. Row 2 the centre seats (E/F) are very close to the window seats (close enough for 'pass the salt and pepper please' in the event you didn't have any on your table!). Row 3 centre is better, and i would avoid row 4.

Given catering is the same, I prefer the 747 to the A380 (but understand many prefer 'new' to 'quiet and private')

First service in a four class 744.

Funny thing is I've talked to two agents now and they assure me it's going to be the same as A380. Case of misinformed staff?

Currently QF are using the un-refurbished 747s between SYD and HKG, VH-OEB or OJM, (VH-OJL is retired) on the Tue and Wed schedules. These have the older 1st cabins. First class seats 4A/K both have basinets between the seat and window. The row behind in business has basinets on the bulkhead in front of both 23A/B and J/K with toilets/bulkhead between rows 4 and 23. What configuration 747 will apply when the 747 goes every day is anyone's guess, but any aircraft can do the QF127/128 round trip within 24 hours

According to AustBT "As of September 29 flights QF127/128 will be flown only by the older Boeing 747-400 jumbo jets, except for 11 December 2014 to 26 January 2015 when an A380 returns onto the daily roster to handle higher demand during the holiday period.Qantas now advises that the superjumbo will also be seen on Sydney-Hong Kong flights on 14 and 15 February 2015 as well as from 27 February to 2 March 2015 inclusive.
(Chinese New Year Thursday falls on 19 February 2015).
Given that Qantas will no longer sell first class on the Sydney-Hong Kong route once the Boeing 747s take over, many top-tier frequent flyers booked into the A380s business class will find themselves upgrades to the A380's first class cabin."

That's my understanding too. Simply put, A380 F seat is only available on A380s right? Shame, we've been really looking forward to this.

I definitely wouldn't let yourself be too disheartened with the substitution.

The 744 F cabin has one of the best ambiences of any spaces aboard a plane. Particularly if flying as a couple, 3E & 3F are great seats: you get a panoramic view of the whole cabin and visual access to what's out most of the windows. Catering and service are largely the same, and given it's a shortish day-time flight, the loss of a newer generation bed is less important.

I would wholeheartedly agree with this. I did F rtn SYD-HKG in June. 747 out and A380 return. Older crew on the 747, superb service and the soft product is exactly the same as the A380. For a daytime flight it was great and it's always a real treat IMHO to sit in the nose of a 747. I will miss them when they are gone :(

Did SYD-JNB in 1A (J service) and loved it, found the bed better than Mk2 J seats

Not as good as F seat on A380 mind you ;-)

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I managed to speak to an agent who's willing to do a bit of investigative work and confirmed that it's indeed the old F product. She was pretty empathic with the whole situation and keen to help so kudos to her. For what it's worth, this could well be our last (and only) chance flying Qantas 747 F so bring it on!

That's exactly what I would be thinking.
I hope you have a wonderful flight :)

AFF advised old F. The QF website confirms old F. The initial agents were wrong. QF doesn't offer new F on the 747. Period.

We flew this product on QF6 recently, thought it was sold as J.

The seat alone is a thousand times better than a Skybed: 6'6" and fully flat. The crew were all 50+ and gave incredible, warm service. Those youngsters on the A380 will never get it.

Being in the nose of a 744 flying F will be something we won't be able to do for much longer so enjoy it.

FYI we take 1/2A.
