Filling in some gaps in Spain, a Greenland cruise and I'm getting a tattoo!

Actually here is one....... it ended up arriving 3 days later and not to where it said it would be. It then wasn't send up to the town I was told it would be and finally was told I'd get it............... when we finish the cruise. Hey ho. No compensation given, but I did sprain my ankle quite badly so they covered that bill.

I can confirm @Flashback 's travails with his bag. I mean - how does a charter flight to a cruise starting in a very remote port take off without every bag checked as being on board? And then the faffing around as to where it was and where it would go - only to find that it went to Nuuk!

Ilulissat - its a popular spot due to the Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO world heritage) that is another prolific 'calver' - the greatest in the northern hemisphere. A bit unusual in that the front of the glacier is some way up the narrow fjord and massive icebergs clog the channel, often being grounded along the way until they melt a bit, re-float and are released into the sea, at the town. Hence all the (relatively small) icebergs as we approached last night.

We woke up to an overcast day, bit of fog and some rain forecast.

IMG_E8526.JPG

In the right background are the icebergs flowing out of the ice fjord, left to right.

IMG_E8530.JPG

Activities offered were boat trips amongst the icebergs, flights and walks of various length. The boat trips and flights were all expensive, so @k_sheep got busy and booked us nine on a private boat trip, for ???half the cost.

We took the boat zodiac into the port, which was very busy. Ilulissat is Greenland's thirst largest town and is growing rapidly, with tourism and fishing being the largest industries. In the town 'tours and activities' are advertised on every second building.

IMG_E8539.JPG

IMG_E8541.JPG

We went out on a 10-seater open motorboar/zodiac . I was a bit apprehensive at first, thinking of three hours exposed to the rain, but the rain held off and it was a remarkable adventure.

As it turned out, a very large berg that was grounded and clogging up the ice fjord re-floated the day before yesterday, so we were able to penetrate far into the fjord compared to cruises to date, this year. This is a record of all the cruises done this year, leaving from the port on the right. The ice fjord is emerging at the bottom right. We are at '1' in the lower centre, with yesterday, just 2 cruises that weren't forced to cruise the outer reaches.

Later, we weighed anchor and again glided and manoeuvred our way out through the ice pack.

Hard to see, but the view from the observation loun ge was 180 degrees of icebergs.

And the view down below would normally be a but unnerving.

The next day we spent moored off some small town where a ship Vs town soccer match was held and you could also participate in 'Milkaffe' - go to someone's place for coffee and cake. Neither of those interested me, and it being a cold and overcast day, I stayed on board, nothing to report.

We got our de-boarding briefing which, like many of the briefings, was just a bit vague. There is no printed program on this voyage/ship - you have to rely on a simplified presentation on the TV.

Overnight we had sailed calmly up the Kangerlussuaq fjord and were moored in the navigable head of the fjord. Zodiacs to get off, then 25 min bus to the airport.

Unusually, air check-in and immigration was to be held on board. I guess there was a reason for this, but its not an ideal situation.

Checked bags outside your door by midnight, as usual. But they were only taken down to the theatre. At 6:15am the first 3 colour groups were told to assemble at the theatre to start check-in. So about 50 people were there. No, no we'll do it by individual colour groups - you are too early. No, we are not. We've done exactly as we were told. And of course a proportion of the pax were oblivious to all this and simply joined the queue.

So then you had to collect your bag from one part of the theatre (amongst all the fixed chairs and benches), trundle it forward with you to the check-in 'desk', then part with it, duly tagged, then have your passport stamped.

IMG_8679.JPEG

IMG_8680.JPEG

We saw bags being loaded into a container on a barge tied to us. Good sign - or so we thought.

IMG_8681.JPEG

359a29a2-7fbe-4196-ae62-ad61b1c22f91.jpg

An hour or so later, first call to get on zodiacs. Then nothing .... nothing ..... We make our way down to the mudroom to find 5 zodiacs ready. We told them about no calls upstairs. The exped leader, who makes these calls is also departing, so I think that led to come non-communication.

IMG_8686.JPEG

IMG_8688.JPEG

At the airport, no one said, but join the security line. This is where it really went off the rails. Long line, 1 x-ray machine. High number of pax clueless about what to take out etc - & no-one saying. Result? Just as a bag is about to go under the ex-ray, Q about liquids & gels, computers made. Oh, so then in >50% of cases, bag had to be opened and rifled through, right there. Sometimes twice. God, it was painful to watch. The next guy didn't learn anything from the guy in front, so same result. And again. And again.

IMG_8693.JPEG

And there are check-in counters there, so still don't know the reason for on-board check-in.

IMG_8695.JPEG

The bird

IMG_8698.JPEG

Then we were delayed on board for an hour as there was some sort of issue in getting the bags off the boat. WTF?

Eventually away, me in 2C again and @k_sheep took this pic as we flew over Greenland. Text book medial moraines.

They messed up our disembarkment, too.
Our flight to Copenhagen stopped in Reykjavik and somehow, 7 people who should have still been on the plane were missing. We sat on the tarmac for almost an hour while the flight attendants walked up and down mispronouncing names, trying to work out who was missing. I'm not sure what was resolved, but no-one reboarded and eventually we took off.
Then, when we finally arrived in Copenhagen, there was another delay while the border officers huddled in the booth, occasionally calling out questions and talking on the phone. One officer came out and waved all the Schengen passports through and eventually told the rest of us that the wrong passport stamp had been issued in Greenland and they needed to find out what to do about it. They finally decided to give us all new stamps and we were allowed in. It was well after midnight by the time we got to our hotels.

Arrived CPH OK and bid farewell to excellent travelling companions @k_sheep & group and @Flashback & group. Till we meet again!

I had 2 nights at CPH before my flights hope. This was a mistake - I wish I had booked flights after just 1 night, but there you go. I chose the Radisson Blu hotel via Booking.com, mainly as it was well located to the old town and the main sights etc. It was only obscenely expensive, not super-obscenely expensive. I'd last stayed here about 30 years ago.

IMG_8728.JPEG

At check-in I was directed to the self check-in tablets. I said - that won't work for me, to which I got a nice condescending "lets try it and see". Of course it didn't work - I had a booking.com ref, not a Radisson one, so they did all the screen tapping for me. Small victory.

Next morning I woke up completely knackered - as in, barely able to get out of bed. Eventually I struggled up, showered and went down for breakfast. Its 9am on Sunday and the breakfast place is nuts. Quite large, but packed to the gills. Brekky options just OK, but lines of 5+ for each of the coffee machines. Unpleasant experience, so I grabbed something quick and scarpered back to the room, where I lay down again. Must be just the accumulation of travelling for 3 weeks.

Eventually I got my sorry cough up and went for a walk. Fortunately Copenhagen is easy to navigate and there are a couple of obvious things to see. Well, easy enough to navigate if you can avoid being collected by a bicycle - who, not withstanding they have wide lanes to themselves, figure its OK to go on the footpaths as well.

Found my way to Christiansborg Castle. Wikipedia:

The present building, the third with this name, is the last in a series of successive castles and palaces constructed on the same site since the erection of the first castle in 1167. Since the early fifteenth century, the various buildings have served as the base of the central administration; until 1794 as the principal residence of the Danish kings and after 1849 as the seat of parliament.

The palace today bears witness to three eras of Danish architecture, as the result of two serious fires. The first fire occurred in 1794 and the second in 1884. The main part of the current palace, finished in 1928, is in the historicist Neo-baroque style. The chapel dates back to 1826 and is in a neoclassical style. The showgrounds were built from 1738 to 1746, in a baroque style.

It is the seat of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), the Danish Prime Minister's Office, and the Supreme Court of Denmark. Also, several parts of the palace are used by the Danish monarch, including the Royal Reception Rooms, the Palace Chapel and the Royal Stables.

There was a very interesting display of the history of Denmark through WW2. The Danes, fearing being squashed, at first tried to be neutral, then allowed 'soft occupation' which inevitably led to full occupation.

IMG_8743.JPEG

IMG_8744.JPEG

Next stop, Rosenborg Castle. Wikipedia:

The castle was originally built as a country summerhouse in 1606 and is an example of Christian IV's many architectural projects. It was built in the Dutch Renaissance style, typical of Danish buildings during this period, and has been expanded several times, finally evolving into its present condition by the year 1624.

The castle was used by Danish regents as a royal residence until around 1710. After the reign of Frederik IV, Rosenborg was used as a royal residence only twice, and both these times were during emergencies. The first time was after Christiansborg Palace burned down in 1794, and the second time was during the British attack on Copenhagen in 1801.

Went for another walk, destination the Amalienborg Palace, residence of Tassie girl, Queen Mary.

IMG_8765.JPEG

IMG_8766.JPEG

Went via Nyhavn, which was pretty

IMG_8771.JPEG

IMG_8773.JPEG

And then the palace complex

IMG_8775.JPEG

It was 6pm, so changing of the guard was on.

IMG_8778.JPEG

IMG_8787.JPEG

Amalienborg is the official residence for the Danish royal family and is located in Copenhagen. Frederick VIII's palace complex has four identical Classical façades, effectively four palaces, with Rococo interiors, laid around an octagonal courtyard. At the centre is a large equestrian statue of Frederick V. Amalienborg was originally built for four noble families, but after Christiansborg Palace burned in 1794 the royal family bought the palaces and moved in. Over the years various monarchs and their families have lived there, including today's King Frederik X and Queen Mary.

I wasn't going to have dinner in the expensive hotel restaurant again, but I had quite a bit on my Wise card, so decided to blow it.

Service was bad again - the barman was juggling, to the amusement of the guys who should be waiting the tables. No tip again.

So, next morning a quick trip to the National Library before going to the airport for a long-awaited trip home.

The library building is known as the Black Diamond, and I could see it from my hotel room. Amazing effect - the black mirror façade shimmered, reflecting the water in front of it.

IMG_8807.JPEG

The glass box fronts the old library, the brick building to the left

IMG_8818.JPEG

IMG_8809.JPEG

Disappointing inside in the old part.

IMG_8813.JPEG

And the Reading Room, usually the highlight, was reserved for readers only! Peasants.

IMG_8814.JPEG

A peek through the glass.

IMG_8815.JPEG

So the trip home begins. Following my preference to break the trip up - its CPH-DOH on QR, short overnight in DOH; DOH-SIN on QR, overnight at SIN; SIN-MEL on SQ, overnight in MEL, then finally MEL_HBA!

Let me say CPH is n ot my favourite airport.

Check-in was OK, once a couple who needed to unpack at check-in got out of the way. Then - passport control!! A long line of 2-3 abreast came into view

IMG_8826.JPEG

Which crept along, turned the corner, and then:

IMG_8827.JPEG

Just 3 booths for hundreds of people. Total cough.

IMG_8828.JPEG

Then to the 'Eventyr' lounge. There was an elevator, but it seemed to be stuck, so I took the stairs. 2.5 stories of them!

IMG_8829.JPEG

Then to the lounge which, typical of Denmark was poorly air conditioned - ie was warm, on this warm day with the sun pouring in. Food only average ("chicken stew" 🤮 ) but they did have a range of self-pour beers.

IMG_8832.JPEG

IMG_8833.JPEG

IMG_8835.JPEG

IMG_8837.JPEG

Very noisy with kids running round, so I decamped to the gate lounge. Or so I thought. Very strange set-up. The actual gate lounge is roped off, so you wait in the corridor. FAs arrive and wait in the gate lounge.

IMG_8842.JPEG

IMG_8848.JPEG

Finally, they open the gate lounge and you can go in and ... wait.

IMG_8850.JPEG

No, I don't mind if I don't use CPH again.

The crew on this leg didn't seem on top of their game. orders were delivered wrongly to me, and others I saw and they seemed disorganised. The dates and arabic coffee was done after seat belts off, rathere than before take-off.

I asked to have my meal 2 hrs before landing. The FA immediately pushed back, suggesting we might be descending by that time. I said lets see how we go. Then, as others were being served, she came and asked me if I would like to eat now. No, I replied, as per previous request.

In the end I asked for it 3 hrs before landing, so it came out 25 mins later, as usual. But poor from the FA.

IMG_8857.JPEG

But the meal was excellent, as usual. Amuse bouche and then crayfish starter

Now here's a question. We flew over Iraq. All down the country were these red-lit installations. The phone enhances the glow, but they are bright, discrete red lights, brighter than any town lights. Any ideas what they might be?

Now that QR have got their plane swaps under control, this is the thing that I detest about them. Expanded airport, plenty of room, but as they don't need the aircraft for a while, they park it in the next postcode and we bus into the terminal. 😡. At least we got a First Class bus, but we were miles from the terminal.

IMG_8884.JPEG

I only had an 8 hour layover, so I booked the Oryx airside again via Qantas Hotels; too expensive otherwise. I've been growing weary of this place and tonight sealed it. Long queue to check in, and then the 'quiet room near the end of the corridor' was in fact at the start of the corridor, so back I went to change it.

This is the view out the window, but there are wooden shutters which block most of the light and most, but not all of the terminal sound.

IMG_8887.JPEG

There are design faults in the room and I won't do an overnight transit here again.

I’m still amazed about the number of bus to/from DOH given all the expansions…🙄

Totally agree about CPH. Although my one and only departure (also on QR albeit pre COVID) was different. The lounge (different one) was before passport control and I made the mistake of leaving and heading to the gate. At the time, there was nothing past PP control other than gates and one loo…. To rub salt in the wounds, QR didn’t do alcoholic PDBs - said it was a CPH rule. Only time I’ve never been offered bubbles on QR….
