Back in March I downloaded the Frequent Flyer Friend free trial. For some reason it didn't work, so when the seven days were up I didn't pay for the full version.

Nevertheless, from time to time a message would open at bottom right of screen saying the program had found a seat on a QF flight on May 15 -- response to a request I had entered to test the system before I discovered it wasn't fully working. I still get that message most times I start up.

Today I decided to sign up, but when I downloaded it, whenever I clicked on the icon to open it I got a message saying a version of the program was already running. I uninstalled what I had just downloaded, but discovered there was a 2,100KB remnant from the March trial -- a remnant that won't let me delete it (it keeps giving the same message, that the application is already running).

Does anyone have any clues? (PC, Windows XP, IE8, recently scanned and cleared.)

It might be that the program is running and thus can't be deleted. Can you see any sign of it running in your active programs icons?

No, it is not even shown among the active programs icons. It's like there's a program running that doesn't exist.

A ~2Mb remnant sounds to me like the actual FrequentFlyerFriend.exe file is still running.

You could try the following:

Start. "Run"

Copy and paste exactly the following into the "Run" box:
taskkill /IM frequentflyerfriend.exe /F
and click on OK.

Should flash up a black screen briefly and then return you back to Windows.
Try the install again.

Go to Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del, select Task Manager), look in the Processes tab for the program that might be running. Select it and then End Task to kill it off.

Then try reinstalling the FFF.

If no luck, check that the old version has been remove Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove from there.

Still no luck, down load one of the removal utilities from the web. Not sure which one would be best in your situation.

Yes, I have been in touch with Hermes.

Unfortunately FFF doesn't work on (a small percentage) of PCs. Thats why we offer a free trial period :)

I have refunded her license fee until such time that she can get FFF to work.

Thanks heaps (so far!). The End Task did remove it. Now to reinstall....

Enough of this byplay, chaps. (Though I did love Mwenenzi's plural of "engineers" as "engineer's". Another case of pie's, pastie's, tomato's and the rest.)

The glitch has not gone away and cannot be eliminated. I thought Task Manager had done it -- highlight the FFF icon and click on End Task, whereupon the icon disappeared -- but no. Thinking it had worked, I reinstalled FFF, only to find that when I clicked on it I got "Application still running".

At one stage I got a Dell window saying I needed to change my settings (font sizes) for FFF to work, so I did all that, and now, not only does FFF not work, but also I have spent half a day trying to reset my font settings (after deleting the FFF program in exasperation).

Buried somewhere deep within my PC (Dell, XP, IE8) is a 2MB remnant of the FFF program that cannot be found and cannot be eliminated.

I'm just going to have to do a daily hunt for QF FF seats (looking at next April, MEL-LHR, J-class).

Hermes,

I'm not a computer Geek but this is a trick I learnt a long time ago and which can prove useful.

It looks like FFF is starting each time the computer is turned on so what you may need to do is disable FFF from the start up sequence.
To do that you need to left click on the start button then left click on run.
Type msconfig and then click OK.
Click the tab named Startup and look to see if FFF has a tick against it as a startup application. If there is a tick then delete the tick, click apply, and then click close. You will be asked restart the computer which you need to do.
On startup a window will appear called System Configuration Utility and you should tick the box and click OK so that it does not appear in future.

Hopefully this will stop FFF starting with the computer each time and then you can start your newer version yourself.

Do not play with other boxes from the dropdown as you could disable your computer. ie If in doubt don’t do it!

Many thanks, Bill. The system kept denying access, but I ignored it and eventually got the unticking to stick. This also gave me the path to the FFF remnant, and I was finally able to delete it.

I suspect now, though, when I download again, while I won't be told the application is still running, I'll be told I am already registered!

More later.
