Asking these question for my parents who have a FF redemption in business class from Brisbane to Honolulu via Sydney with a QF flight number.

The flight from Brisbane to Sydney is also on Jetstar with a QF flight number.

First question is will they be able to check in their luggage in Brisbane to Honolulu. I am aware that normally on Jetstar flights you can not check in luggage to end destination but as they are ticket is a QF flight number not sure if this changes things.

Second question is will they be able to access lounge in either of Brisbane or Sydney.

Many thanks in advance for assistance.

No lounge access in Brisbane as they are on a Y booking to Sydney as there is no J, but should be fine in Sydney. Through check won't be an issue.

Markis10 thanks for quick response. They will be pleased with your answers.

I had tried to search myself but could not come up with the answers!

The baggage does take a bit of digging:

International baggage transfers - Interline partners

We’ll transfer your baggage if you have international flights on the same booking through Qantas or one of our interline partners:

Flight Connections | Jetstar

Note they can also use the transfer bus at gate 10 in Sydney but will need to change terminal and re clear security, if it was me I would just catch the train for $5

JQ uses T2 at SYD, and the QF seamless bus goes from T3. Going through more than the minimum number of security and xrays is not advisable. Especially when it comes to the fact they have to take the least time to get across to get to T1.
It just means that it will take longer, second Markis's point to pay for the train transfer.
If they have a QF metal flight, then yes, uses the seamless transfer from T3 gate 10 is best.
EDIT: if they are getting the BNE -> SYD JQ flight that touches down into SYD at 14:40, and the JQ to HNL is at 18:00, I would not go to T3.
Not to mention that eventhough they would OLCI, they would still have to present passports to JQ staff to be scanned, and this is not even to Immi/Customs stage yet!

Thanks for the information. They are on the JQ flight that leaves Brisbane 1.45pm and arrives Sydney at 3.25pm so is great news their luggage will be booked through to Honolulu from Brisbane. They are going over to celebrate my fathers 80th birthday so trying to make thee trip as easy as we can for them.

Without luggage they will take the train and I have explained that to them. I did it myself a few years ago when flying Brisbane to Hong Kong with Virgin/Virgin Atlantic and it will be relatively easy for them.

They have even booked valet parking at Brisbane Domestic Airport which is good value and my mother told for an extra $20 someone will take their bags from the car to checkin counter.

Something to consider too, if they are travelling between SYD dom - int, sometimes, on the weekends, the train line gone off service, due to "trackworks", but there will be a bus to do the transfer from above the train station at dom if that happens.
ESTA is the thing that irks me, about maybe one day, many years down the track, that I might want to visit the US. Usd$14, ... mmm, ...
OK, anyway, best of the trip for the both of them.
Pity JQ could'nt depart and arrive into T3 eh?

I believe the train transfer is now $5.40, just so you know.

If there is track work, I would not take the city rail bus, the seamless transfer from qantas would be better.

One point to note, people are not "x-rayed" during domestic security checks*. I can think of no reason to say the minimum number of security checks is advisable. Getting to the train from T2 will be much quicker than the seamless transfer, but the security check is not a reason to take the train. Convenience and potential saved time is the reason.

* People are not x-rayed during international security checks in Australia either, but some people get confused by the whole body scanners

I don't mean to rain on your parade Moffatt39 but JQ don't through check luggage froma JQ domestic flight to any flight whether it be another JQ domestic flight, JQ international or any other airline.

I asked a JQ PSM at BNE Domestic who confirmed that they will not through check your bags to HNL which means your parents would have to collect their bags at SYD T2 then take on the train around to the international terminal where they would need to checkin again at SYD T1. My understanding is that JQ baggage handlers at SYD T2 don't take bags across to the international terminal.

What may be an option for you is calling QF & asking if they can rebook the BNE/SYD flight to one operated by QF metal as QF will through check bags to the JQ SYD/HNL flight provided both flights are in the same booking which they would be if both flights are still in the existing QF pnr.

QF would not through check bags if you did a BNE/SYD booking through the QF website & SYD/HNL through the JQ website however this doesn't apply to you.

Thanks Ozbeachbabe I will let them know to expect they may have to collect their bags in Sydney. If their flight was a JQ booking then I would understand.

As their flight has QF number (even though a redemption booking) on JQ flight not sure if that makes any difference.

The flight is on Tuesday 15 July so I will post what happens with them. Not the end of the world if they have to collect the bags in Sydney for the train transfer. Even though Dad is 80 still pretty fit.

It's not so much how the flight is booked ie a QF marketed/codeshare flight, but whose metal the flights are on ie it's still a JQ domestic to a JQ international flight connection even though it's been booked with a QF flight number through QF.

It still might be worth calling up QF & asking them if they can change the BNE/SYD to a QF metal flight as it would be less hassle for them.

Checkin for the JQ3 SYD/HNL at 1800 flight closes one hour prior so they would need to be all checked in by 1700 at the very latest.

Maybe for 2 to get across from SYD dom to int, if cant change from JQ BNE to SYD to QF BNE to SYD is $$ taxi.
And pack light, OR use the fold in bag with one way valve that expels air. Target Aust sells them.

Have spoken with my parents in Honolulu and can report on their experience.

Firstly they had nothing but praise for the valet parking with porter service at the Brisbane Domestic Airport. If you book on line is a very reasonable price.

As expected even though they had a QF flight number they could not check through their luggage on JQ to Honolulu. They used the train transfer with luggage without any problems.

Flight into Sydney was about 30 minutes late and then had a problem at check as my mother had entered a number incorrectly on my fathers ESTA. They were sent to Flight Centre in the international terminal who were able to assist to do another one and fee charged was a reasonable $20 plus the ESTA charge. They went back to check in and asked for lounge pass but were told they could only use the lounge if Qantas Club members. They advised that their flight in business class had a QF flight number but no go and they had other staff over to confirm no go.

As time was getting tight they would not had have any time to visit the lounge even if they had the pass. After they went through immigration and security it was time to board at 5.00pm and no time for duty free shopping.

Surely a business class flight booked through QF with a QF flight number gets access to a QF lounge. As with the Fiji flights with QF codeshare.

Not sure if it makes a difference but was a redemption booking but with QF flight number

Should not make a difference whether you pay cash or points. You are still buying the flight from QF.

Tend to agree with you drron, I only ever fly J and only on points, whether classic or Masa. Once you get your boarding pass you go straight to the Business lounge show your Business class boarding pass and in you go. Although about 10 or more years ago I was refused entry in Sydney as my ticket was an award fare in J and they told me that I was not eligable for lounge entry, couldn't understand it at the time, and still can't, but that was over 10 years ago. I wonder if there is some fine print somewhere to say that lounge entry is not garanteed on an award fare. Haven't had an issue in Sydney since, and used their lounge many times since.
