Hi there,

looking for help interpreting these fare rules:

No Show
A No Show fee of A$800 per person applies.
Additional local service fees and taxes may apply, plus any fare difference.
Cancellation (including no show)
Before departure:
Except where No Show fee applies:
  • Cancellation fee of AUD $400 per person applies.

After departure:
  • Ticket is non refundable

This fare may be used as credit towards the payment of any higher fare from the point of origin, provided the new fare conditions are met. A reissue fee of AUD $225 per person applies. Cancellation after No Show ticket remains non-refundable. If the new fare is cancelled the original fare cancellation conditions will apply. This credit must be used within 12 months of the original tickets date of issue.

I went to cancel online (prior to departure) and was given two options, a refund or a flight credit. Am I correct in thinking that in both cases I will receive a refund, less $400, either credited back in cash or to the original PNR to be used as a voucher (I wouldn't mind keeping the PNR...)?

I think I'm just confused by the reissue fee, not sure where that comes into play?

Thanks for your help!

What is the origin and destination and when were the flights booked?
You may be eligilble for the Fly Flexible policy

If your booking is eligible, you should not be charged any reissue fees etc, and you can get the whole amount in a credit. Only if you want a cash refund will you be charged the cancellation fee.

This is a SYD-SIN return sales fare. I need to cancel this so I can file an insurance claim so want to make sure I'm taking any hits now and not later.

My understanding of the Fly Flexible policy is that the change fee is waived but not that I can put the flight into credit and re-book later?

I don't see any evidence from that page that you won't get the full value in the credit, since it's an international flight it would still be eligible for the Fly Flexible policy. Read the link I posted above. Flight credits are mentioned near the end under "Request a Flight Credit and rebook when you're ready."

If you will never travel Qantas again (and I could see how that might be a view point), and your only concern is getting the cash back now, then you can cancel with the fee, but know that it will still be up to 8 weeks before you get the refund.

Whether you can get the fee back from your travel insurance is unknowable without reviewing the PDS in detail by an expert - they have plenty of loopholes. They might say that you should have mitigated your damages by accepting the credit.
