... But please don't start this mainstream media nonsense, it drives me insane. A term made up by Trump supporters and conspiracy nutters, who then post links to Fox news (about as main stream as it gets).
The expression MSM was used by the supporters of Jeremy Corbyn in early 2015, well before Trump and his supporters started using the expression.

Maybe, I note Trump was on the campaign trail in early 2015...
but I don't pay much attention to stuff that drives me insane.

great info... if work didn't filter it as "tasteless"

It's just another example of the dumbing down of society. I guess the internet filtering at work agrees with me

As for the rest, when content is actively given by an entity to Facebook for publication, then Facebook sets the terms.

Perhaps Australian media companies should actually be paying Facebook to display their content links - in effect they have been using Facebook as a "free" promotional and advertising channel for their own product (news) for ages!

There are problems with your argument.

Read "Who’s to blame for Facebook’s news ban?" - The Ethics Centre (formerly St James Ethics Centre) 25 FEB 2021

The problem with your argument, that news orgs posts on Facebook themselves, their articles aren't being picked up by search bots, at a very rudimentary level, from the article is:

"In a sense, the decision to have a strategy on Facebook is ‘voluntary’, but it’s voluntary in the same way that it’s voluntary for people to own an attention-guzzling, data sucking smartphone. We might not like living with it, but we can’t afford to live without it. Like inviting your boss to your wedding, it’s voluntary, but only because the other options are worse."

And to allow Facebook do nothing is no longer an option, because you can see how Facebook is central to the lives of majority of the world's population, which leads us to the next bit of this article:

"French theorist Paul Virilio wrote that “When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck; when you invent the plane you also invent the plane crash; and when you invent electricity, you invent electrocution.”

If inventing a ship also invents shipwrecks, it might be up to you to find ways to stop people from drowning.
"

Most people are able to exercise critical analysis skills, hopefully.

You over estimate the skills of the general population, I would say.

My flatmate, who is only 18 years old, just finished school, had told me that she has doubts if COVID is real. Earlier this week, she asked if I saw the video of ScoMo getting the needle, and there was an orange plastic cap at the top of the needle / syringe. According to news updates (her words), the orange cap stops the liquid from going into ScoMo, or in other words, ScoMo faked his jab.

I asked her where she gets her news from, and she answered "Facebook". That's it.

I asked her if she knew that Facebook pulled the plug on news, and if she noticed that all the real news have all disappeared. Her answer was no, she did not know, and did not notice.

I also have another friend, who is in her early 30s, who told me she does not follow news, her main screen consumptions are Netflix, and small amount of Facebook.

Facebook's audience is aging rapidly, most young people just have a presence there because its like the phone directory of today, they are spending far more time on other platforms which has Facebook's knickers in a knot as well as their usage has declined rapidly in the younger generations.

Indeed. Who remembers MySpace?

I think there is an adage that once parents starting doing or using something, their children will stop their own doing or using.

I almost mentioned MySpace. It's still there online. I was going to suggest a mass reuse of MySpace to counter facebook...

Sadly, I had this confirmed after my post. Someone I work with was cc'd on an email that requested some information. They thought the person was asking them for the information - 'Dear [completely different person], Please send me XYZ'. Workmate: 'what is XYZ, why are they asking me for XYZ'.
It took 3 days before they realised...
*facepalm

I think there is an adage that once parents starting doing or using something, their children will stop their own doing or using.

Although anecdotally there seems to be a trend that once said children become parents themselves they will start using/doing again. Which seems to be the case for FB.

Yes that’s been my experience with my daughter. Son and GF went back on when they moved overseas. Many of son’s school and uni friends have friend requested me in the last year or so. I mainly don’t accept those, unless we are actually friends or at least keep in touch in real life! I think the wretched virus and kids reaching really credible adulthood has made many of the younger ones appreciate the ability to stay in touch with their families and friends.

It will make people think twice about using FB for any clubs or businesses.

I seriously doubt it. Being involved with a few sporting clubs and community organisations, FB is by far the most used tool to communicate noticeboard style and receive incoming queries. It's a given you'll reach a large % of your target audience with it, and no other solution right now fills that gap across that many generations.

I don't even have a FB account btw, but the benefits to those organisations are obvious.

Why don't people set up a web site for the club or whatever? Everyone got access to a browser?

Websites are so 2000's lol. But seriously

- Takes time to setup and administer a web site. Takes less with FB
- Appears in your FB feed for users i.e. you don't need to actively visit it to receive an update.
- Notifications to phones etc. help volunteers respond quickly. With a website it's email.
- Comments and discussion are much easier to engage in for users, and visible i.e. someone asking a question - receiving a response will help others with that same question.

There's many more, but basically it boils down to making it easier / quicker for volunteers and those involved to manage.

Don't facebook and websites have different functionality?

Sometimes it can be really difficult to find information on FB (especially after the latest "upgrade") , whereas many websites have more logical presentation of information, organised by topic rather than chronology.

FB - communication, websites - information

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

Cost, complexity, time, security. Many many reasons.
Um, I don't know about cost. A domain name is only like AUD 10 to AUD $30 per year. Web hosting basic like shared host is like USD 30 to USD $50 per year. Any kid could set up a basic HTML or WordPress. And the good thing is, you can have a centralised e-mail for contact like info@club , and you are not at the mercy of Facebook deleting your post or what not, or have a similar club name to some other club in another country. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe I'm thinking too business like.
