so whats everyones strategy or approach when looking to book J or F long haul from Aus to Eu

assuming its in between 6-12 months in advance, and youve missed the 356 day release of flights, and its not peak times?

just wondering what are the realistic probablilities of getting an award flight?

Be flexible about dates and ports. Consider Star Alliance airlines. If your points are limited, waitlist a few flights first before booking acceptable flights. Have had mixed results with waitlisting so you need to be prepared to run with what you book.

and book each person on a separate booking. As well as each leg separately. This results in a higher chance of clearing a waitlisted flight, or at least some off the proposed flight.

My strategy always book as one way ticket, much easier. About 2 months ago I secured 3 J class syd-sin-LHR Depart 18Dec.
And another one way ticket zrh-sin-syd Depart 7Jan.
Only downside is you lose the free stop-over ( if booked as 1 return ticket ).

just booked today for 1x FRA to SYD with a ~14hr stopover (by choice) in Suites, at the advantage level though. Includes SQ221 the new suite.
SYD to FRA stays as J though.
Travel dates in June this year.

At least its J on the way there and F/R on the way back! Doing it the other way was awful (we were so spoiled)

Yeah on the way there in J I found saver availability so hard to say no. On the return was standard at 150k, so another 110k got me suites.. Hard to say no

Thnaks everyone
Definitely looking at flexible dates but we have a rough period

Looking at suites or first class
And one way too

Quite daunting for a first timer

Points aren't a problem but we don't want to overpay

I too am interested in 2 x F/R MEL-LHR mid next year....so looking for a bit of advice on the process....The flights I'm looking for (daytime MEL-SIN) are always Saver waitlist..and the A380 (SIN-LHR) is Saver waitlist...so when I attempt to book do I search MEL-LHR and waitlist for 2 seats??..or do I do search each leg and waitlist 2 on each leg?..i.e which option may yield the better outcome...and does anyone have any idea of when the 380's SIN-LHR are out of service yet?...much appreciated....Ishin

Wait list the F seats you want. Then book confirmed J if you can. Then you can lock in your plans.

I'm waitlisted for 2 x PAX in September fro Suites for CDG-MEL. I can get confirmed J tickets on the this route for the same points as Saver Suites. If I take the confirmed J's I'll have just a few points left. If the wait-listed Suites come through, can I cancel the J tickets and re-use those points for the Suites?

Many thanks! Will move on this now.

Booked a saver wait-list tonight for J from CDG to MEL and got availability confirmation back within 30secs. Hope Suites wait-list comes through, but at least know we can return home in comfort. Thanks for all the posts.
