I am travelling to QLD out of Sydney on Monday. I will take my wife into the QC as my guest but we now have an extra person travelling with us. How strict are the gate keepers with the guest rules? Is there a way to get a guest pass quickly? Or can we be so bold as to ask someone entering the club who is solo to take our extra guest in? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Ask nicely and you maybe surprised at the answer. Of course it would depend on how busy the Qantas lounge is at the time.

Another option is to ask someone entering the club but do not do this near reception.

Eeew please no. Personally I consider this begging, not a good look.

Just ask the attendant on entry (as stated above) if it would be ok, IME if it's not in peak periods and you ask nicely you'd be allowed an extra guest. If you are declined, and a WP+ is behind you, you might be lucky and they hear you and guest your extra guest in for you. I've personally done this a few times. However as always in these situations YMMV.

If you want to guarantee lounge access for the plus 1, you may want to explore the AA paid lounge memberships. Only problem is you will be up for $99US

Just ask nicely - I have a few times been able to take extra guests in. Don't expect it though as a right. In my experience Sydney is stricter than say Canberra, but asking while making it clear you know it would be a huge favour is the way to go.

Note with this, that a recent change to the access rules means that access to the Qantas Lounges requires you to be on an AA flight number if you are on Qantas.

It was posted on the thread in the AA forum during the week ... I first saw it on ft .. ...

Looks like the 30 day membership (and perhaps A/C membership in general is to take a big hit as far as accessing Qantas Clubs and International Business lounges)

The new wording on aa.com:

Looking at a specific lounge, ADL / Adelaide:

The Qantas Club

Must present your membership card (or 30 Day Membership receipt) and boarding pass at lounge check-in counter for same day travel on an American Airlines or US Airways operated flight or an American Airlines marketed flight operated by Qantas.
The previous wording was:
Access to nearly 40 Admirals Club locations worldwide and over 30 international lounges operated by oneworld® partner Qantas (must be traveling on Qantas operated flight for access to Qantas lounges). And as an added benefit, Admirals Club members also now have access to 18 US Airways Clubs.
This change will severely reduce the usefulness of this for Oz residents.

Not according to the benefits page on the QF site!

This change has come across very quietly (compared to the change of access regarding the EK lounges)

Well 2 out of 2. I took the direct approach and asked poliltely and the responce was overwhelmingly positive. My guest was made to fel extra welcome, which was a huge treat for her. She has lived quite a sheltered life so she thought the club was wonderful and felt quite special to have a glimpse into a world she did not know existed. Super great PR for Qantas indeed.

Exactly the result I expected, great stuff. :)

I was allowed an extra guest once in the Int J Lounge. The lounge angel was more than happy to let my two friends in for EK406 to AKL.
On closer inspection we were 3 of maybe 15 guests in the lounge at that time :)

Good to know! I was telling someone today about the 30 day pass...I'll make sure to let him know that this new restriction makes the pass less appealing.

Great news.

May I ask how busy the lounge was at the time?

Clearly not yesterday in Melb QP around 4pm. Packed to the hilt with numerous requests to get luggage of the seat.

A friend went to Fiji recently on FJ with QF codeshare. Qantas club member with a guest + 2 guest passes, 2 other adults and 2 children all allowed into SYD business lounge.

Ask nicely and don't have high expectations and occasionally things work out.
