dear all,

i've gone and bought a ticket with the following route and all on Q class:

SYD -> NRT on QF
NRT -> SJC on AA
LAX -> NRT on AA
NRT -> SYD on QF

and was asked to pay over AUD $570 for the extra charges and taxes on normally associate with such a trip

i've gone ahead and tried to work out what they would be and i have the following figures (taken from http://www.consolidatedtravel.com.au/qf/taxes.asp)

SYD:
Pax movement charge (AU): AUD $38
Noise levy (QK): AUD $3.40
Pax service charge (WY): AUD $41.16
Safety and security charge (WG): ???

NRT:
None

SJC:
Arrival (US): USD $13.40
Animal/planet inspection fee (XA): USD $3.00
Immigration fee (XY): USD $6.00
Arrival customs fee (YC): USD $5.00

LAX:
Departure (US): USD $13.40
Fed security tax (AY): USD $2.50
Pax facility charge (XF): USD $4.50

QF:
Fuel surcharge (YQ): $81 x 2 = AUD $162

AA:
Security equip maintenance (GA): USD $5
Fuel surcharge (Q): $55 x 2 = USD $110 = AUD ~$145

no matter how i add up the figures, i don't come anywhere near the $570 as quoted..

can anyone else see where i've gone wrong?

many thx in advance

ioki

have the travel agent jot down in his quotes, the tax codes one by one.

I find this sort of request seemed a bit repulsive for some of them but I had been ripped once so since then, I always ask for the tax codes everytime I get a ticket price.

the TA in question was only willing to supply me the following:

Au Airport: 85
Us Airpots: 76
Fuel and airline security 382

which makes decoding very very difficult indeed!

hence i've started to look into the charges in depth!

hmm.. in reading the above numbers, i've the need to re-tract the original value of ~$570 in my first post and reduce that down to ~$520

still waiting for the TA to issue the ticket also!

thank you very serfty for the information..

i had just called Qantas FF and they had quoted me the post may 5th even tho i had asked for the cost before the raise..

atleast its somewhat clear now..

TA quoted me a total of $382 for fuel surcharge + security

from the PDF, QF is AUD $81/segment and AA is USD $55/segment, so no matter how one account for currency movement in the last 72 hours, its hard to believe the TA cost is any where near what the airlines have been telling me!

AUD $162 (QF) + AUD $145 (AA) != AUD $382

i have just submitted the above information to the TA, currently awaiting for feedback

Note that from Saturday, Qantas Fuel Fines go up by up to $23 per sector. (to $98 from $75)
Don't wait until Saturday. The new surcharges come in for all tickets issues after today.
QF Newsroom said:
Any ticket issued on or after May 5th will get the surchareges.

Also note that if QF issue the ticket, the surcharges are imposed by QF at the QF rate. So even the AA flights will be surcharged at the QF international rate or $75 or $98 depending on if issued today or tomorrow.

Also note that the YQ surcharges also include the $6 security surcharge with takes the international flight charge from $71 to $81 or from $98 to $104 from tomorrow.

According to my experience, the ticket price you'll have to pay will be the dependant on WHEN you pay it, not when the ticket is issued.

Say the surcharge will increase at the end of 5th of May, you pay by tomorrow and you'll still pay the pre-5th of May price. So you shouldn't pay the Post-5th of May price just because your ticket will arrive on (say), the Monday following week.

You should pay it out quickly, the surcharge increase this time for QF is gigantic....

Does anyone here have information about sector calculation please?

I just want to know how many sectors it take from Melb to Singapore, Melbourne to CGK, Melbourne to NRT, and Melbourne to LAX.

Thanks

Al

Since the ticket is being issued through Qantas, the surcharges should be four times $75 fuel surcharge plus four times $6 security levy. So I make that 4 x $81 = $324.

If you want to save of fuel surcharges, have the ticket issued by AA and they will only charge you 2 x US$55 trans-Pacific surcharges.

Taxes and surcharges are claculated when the ticket is issued. When the TA requires you to pay is an entirely different issue and between you and the TA. And note that this round of surcharge increased are to apply to any ticket issued on or after 5th May, not the end of the 5th of May. Any ticket issued after midnight tonight will incur the increased charges, whether you have paid the TA today or next week.

I am not sure what you mean by "just because your ticket will arrive on...". Ticket Issue is a process that is performed by the TA or the airline. It does not necessarily coincide with ticket printing, postage, delivery etc, and applies equally to electronic tickets as it does to paper tickets.

So what you're suggesting is, if I pay my ticket today at the price they've given to me 2 weeks ago, and then the ticket is then issued to me 2 weeks from today, the TA is effectively subsidizing my tax.

Is that a correct interpretation?

Also, Ioki.... NRT has a Passenger Charge of about AUD$20.40 according to the link you provided.

Cheers

I don't think you are fully understanding the concept of "Ticket Issue". There is no need for the words "to me" on the end of the statement. The ticket is issued when the TA tells the reservation system computer to move it from a reservation status into an issued status. This has nothing at all to do with handing you a piece of paper. You cannot receive the ticket (either paper ticket or an e-ticket receipt) until it has been issued by the airline's computer system.

When the TA tells the computer to "issue" the ticket is the time when the taxes are calculated. To have the fare calculation based on the lower fuel surcharges, the ticket must be issued before 5th May (ie before midnight on 4th May - today). When the TA collects payment from you and when the TA hands you your ticket or e-ticket receipt is irrelevant to the process and between you and the TA.

If you pay the TA today, and they do not issue the ticket until tomorow, then either the TA is going to wear the difference or they will be asking you for the difference later.

actually.. that's what i had thought also, however i was corrected today by the TA and another, apparantly AA's fuel surcharge for transpacific flight now stand at 75 USD a pop!

so the difference of 20 USD per segement was where i on my own calculation versus what TA had quoted me plus a refund of ~$18, the TA had admitted mis-calculation of charges by their system!

its also a bit too late for me to be dictating who should be issuing the ticket now as i have committed to payment since i didn't want to get caught out by QF's price rise

or in my case where the ticket hasn't been issued for 2 days now, i emailed the TA sometime today in the middle of my charge and taxes episode, and reminded them that i had committed to payment well before the surcharge raise by QF, they did agreed that i will not be out of pocket should they be late in the act of ticket issueing!

i looked at that one quite closely and had decided since i was transitting at NRT, so i should be exempt from that charge

My understanding is that AA's latest fuel surcharge increases (from late March) were an increase of US$10 one-way on sectors which had surcharges imposed (Trans-Atlantic, Trans-Pacific, SA etc), except for services to or from Japan. So since your AA flights are to/from NRT, this increase would not apply, and I believe it should stand at either US$55 or US$65. Unfortunately I can't find the info on AA's web site right now.

I was also of the understanding that when the ticket is issued by QF, it is QF's YQ charges that are added for all sectors, not those of the operating airlines. If this is true, then as the ticket is issued by QF, you should be charged 4 x A$81. What AA charge on their issued tickets would be irrelevant to your fare calculation since the ticket is issued by QF and not by AA.

i've came up with a list of possible charges one might encounter on my said segement, will someone be able to verify for me? all values shoud be in AUD, and have used the QF official ROE 1.356494

<SNIP>
300.00 - 4 x 75, 4 sectors of QF fuel surcharge (YQ)
24.00 - 4 x 6, 4 sectors of QF insurance levy (YQ)
38.00 - SYD passenger movement (AU)
42.28 - SYD passenger service charge (WY)
3.40 - SYD noise levy (QK)
3.39 - US passenger CAS (AY)
39.34 - 2 x 19.67, US arr/dept (US)
6.72 - US animal/plant inspection (XA)
9.50 - US immigration (XY)
7.47 - US customs (YC)
6.11 - LAX passenger facility (XF)
