Excess on some car types not covered by insurance

hi

Noticed an interesting non-inclusion in my travel insurance, which is through Insure And Go - they only cover the excess for bog standard cars. Their Section L excludes "expensive & exotic" cars. Which being a relative term, I asked them if a Ford Mustang in Hawaii is covered - they said no. Not worth having the debate with them about it, but in the US, Mustangs aren't expensive nor exotic! Cheaper than here. A Ferrari I could understand.

Anyway, has anyone come across a policy that DOES cover the excess for this sort of car?

Also, what are the views about the cover provided by www.rentalcover.com ??

thanks

I had the same problem with Insure and Go. Ended up purchasing a tour on my NAB card to activate the insurance on their for hire cars.

I think there are also shortcomings in the rest of that travel insurance-really need to read their PDS. The budget cover is certainly not one I would be buying

Actually why would the car type impact the excess? The risk for the insurer is capped at the excess anyway.

So a written off Class A costs the same excess as a Class H.

Aaah, the black box mystery of insurance underwriting. Risk = likelihood x consequences. Consequences are constant (capped) , maybe the likelihood of having a claim is greater for certain car types? Or most probably explanation - the claims for "cheaper" cars are more likely to be under the cap than for the "prestige" cars (eg to repair a panel for a Class A might cost $2000, to repair same panel on a "prestige" vehicle might cost $4000). Who knows?

I know that when we were hiring a car in the UK I wasn't covered by Insure and Go as the two cars we were looking at were going to be either a Volvo or a small SUV and Insure and Go advised that neither were covered by the policy as Volvo is considered a luxury brand and SUVs aren't covered, they said the underwriter makes the decisions. I even asked what happens if I pick a Nissan sedan and end up with a Volvo when we pick it up, they said I wouldn't be covered, which I found to be ridiculous.

Sounds like Insure and Go isn't the insurance to choose for a peace of mind holiday.
