I thought I would share with you all an excellent experience I had on Qantas last Friday night. MEL-SYD in J, seat 1A. It was a 767 with a 1-2-2 config.

The lounge at MEL was really nice and clean and not too crowded. The staff-member at the door was disinterested but not really rude; I didn't mind as I was just hanging to have a drink after a total cough day in the office.

There were a few delays, and I found it amusing that the 1900, 1930 and 1945 flights to Sydney all kind of boarded at the same time hehe.

Anyway the crew were really good. You know the old-school type that obvisouly enjoy their jobs and are really customer-focussed? The CSM was chatting to me about the fact that the single line of seats used to be 1st class in the olden days with a wall down the side... I don't even remember domestic flights ever having 1st class!

I was drinking gin & tonics and they had a fresh one ready for me every time without even asking. The food was fine too.

All of things that made this flight great, interestingly enough, are free. Good old-fashioned attentive and caring service. If Qantas only had more of this they would easily be in the running for world's best airline.

This experience was in stark contrast to the flight I had coming back to MEL though...

It is great when you get excellent service but unfortunately in my experience this does not happen very often.

Qantas have become very good at being consistently inconsistent.

Hmmm ... they did not have "Dreamtime" seats back when 1st class was all the A seats, but the concept was the same.

From the mid 90's thru to when both Ansett and Qantas eliminated First Class, the QF B762/B763/A300 all had the first two rows with white headrest covers, designating First Class. The remaining 3-4 rows were Business class and the covers were Grey(?). Other than that the seats were the same.

The B733/B734 had the first two rows dedicated to First Class with the next 5 rows being convertible J/Y seating.

I remember AN having first class, IIRC the seats were red? It was about 14 years ago though!

I think I must be a lucky one of late, every QF flight the staff have been friendly and helpful.

Personally I don't need much on a short haul flight. I'll see how I go on my trip to DEL later this month.

Good to hear Max.

I have always had pretty good service in the J Cabin with QF.

I agree that the attitude of the crew is what it's all about.

I'll have to get a gin and tonic next time rather than scotch!!

I always felt kind of ripped off when I got a "pretend" business class seat! But the flip side was if you had that kind of seat in Y and if there was no one in the middle you could shove the arm rest over and make your own J class seat! :p

When I was younger, I was on a 762 BNE-WLG that had the first class separated by a wall from business class - like XX-XX|-X
