Ever wonder what happens to used hotel soap? - USATODAY.com

By Roger Yu, USA TODAY

By Brandi Godbee, Clean the World

Ever wonder what happens to leftover soap and shampoo at hotels?

Most are thrown away. About 1 million partly used bars of soap are tossed out daily by U.S. hotels, according to Clean the World Foundation, a non-profit organization that recycles used soap for distribution to developing nations and homeless shelters.

But recycling organizations such as Clean the World, based in Orlando, and Global Soap Project, based in Atlanta, are starting to get more attention from large hotel companies.

What a great program.

A friend of mine collects airline amenity kits with/without contents, and gives them out to those in need (in Melbourne) - often filling them with extra odds and sods that comapnies give away.

Good on them.

Glad that they don't simply repackage the left overs.....

PHEW! When I saw the header I thought it was going to be some story about hotels re-stamping and re-wrapping used soap!:mrgreen:

I thought exactly the same thing! Mind you I can't remember the last time I used soap form a hotel! I generally hate wasting it when I may use it once!

I dont use it either, I only use chemical free organic products so tend to carry my own.

I always put the soap back into the packet for the next person to use.

I also fold my towels up neatly and put them back on the rack.

It's better for the environment!

Great program!

Admittedly I am one of those people who takes home the unused/unopened soap/shampoo/conditioners/body lotions from decent hotels, they are actually pretty good ......

The way some hotels are reluctant to provide extra soap, I'm surprised that there is much around to reclaim

its not new at all

A few years ago (6 to be exact) I worked as Purchasing Manager for 4 Accor hotels in Sydney - we bought and supplied reusable/recyclable liquid soap/shampoo/body lotion to all guests. Mind you - it was horribly expensive...but what a great feeling and also a great way to comply with environmental certification ;)

What a great idea!

I hardly ever open up a new bar/cake of soap preferring to use the liquid/creamy soap that is usually provided in most hotels. I do carry a bar of soap with me and will use that if none of the liquid soap is around.

And the unopened bars of soap found in my hotel rooms find their way back home either as collectors items or to be used for washing hands....
