Hi All,

I'm looking to book a flight from Europe (either from Helsinki on December 10th or London after that) to Sydney. I'm happy to fly any airline via any route. Price is my ultimate concern but after having a taste of Business class recently I'd consider cheap Business flights also. I'm a little overwhelmed with where to start to find the best flights, I'm normally restricted to certain dates so having all these options is new.

Thanks :)

Finnair and Malaysian get you back for less than 1k in economy. Do you have any points to try for an award booking? Tough time of year though .

As it will be approaching Christmas holidays, it is cheaper in your case to leave Europe earlier rather than later.

Having said that, leaving Helsinki on 10 December wouldn't be too expensive. I've found the following itinerary with Malaysia Airlines for €644.14, available for booking on the MH website:

10 Dec MH9151 HEL 08:20 - FRA 09:55 (operated by Finnair)
10 Dec MH5 FRA 12:00 - KUL 06:50 (+1 day)
11 Dec MH141 KUL 09:00 - SYD 20:15

I've only found one combination of flights which is cheaper, however it involves a very long stopover (almost 25 hours) in Russia (which you would need to get a transit visa for) and for this reason I would not recommend it. You'd also have to leave Helsinki a day later. The flights are with S7 and Cathay and the cost is €555. If you want more info let me know.

Thanks for the responses so far. I don't have enough points for an award booking. The Malaysian flights look decent. What do people feel about flying Malaysian? I'm inclined to think they are probably safer and emptier than ever.

Just checking via Expedia I found this for £537. Seems like Malaysian are allowing 2 checked bags for free which works for me as I'm moving back to Oz and have a lot of stuff, might get away without having to ship stuff.

Honestly, both selections of flights that you have found look good. I'd probably just take the cheaper of the two, being Malaysia Airlines. I've flown with them after MH370 - one flight was 100% full and one was almost empty (although that was a KUL-PEK flight). Both flights were very good and I would be happy to fly them again. And as you say, the 2 checked bags are always a bonus and I see the LHR-KUL is an A380.

BA aren't bad either; a different in-flight experience being a Western airline but they are usually pretty good. Honestly, I'm surprised that flight is so cheap as BA is usually considerably more expensive than MH (and a lot of the rest of the competition too).

Yep I saw the BA fare too but it looked closer to Aud 1100. Both good deals. UK APD would add about $170 if your initial departure is London; transit is no charge.

Can you be more specific for what you consider to be cheap? Also will your payment be more for the Business Class fare than the winner of the Economy Class fare?
