It appears there is a chance that we will be paying an environmental surcharge on flights arriving into and departing from the EU, although this is only draft legislation at this stage.
Other industries have been subjected to emission monitoring for some time, so I guess that it was only a matter of time before it was applied to the air industry.
The Australian said:Carbon scheme to hit air travellers
Ben Webster November 17, 2006
AIRLINE passengers on all flights arriving or departing from European Union airports will pay up to $67 extra for a return ticket to cover the environmental damage caused by their flights, under European Commission proposals to address climate change.
Draft legislation to be published next month would require all flights arriving or departing from EU airports to buy permits to cover their carbon dioxide emissions.
The document says airlines would join Europe's emissions trading scheme by 2011 and predicts they will pass on the costs to their passengers.
The report estimates that passengers on flights within Europe would pay an extra E9 ($15) for a ticket, with the actual sum depending on the price of the permits. Those flying long haul would pay up to E40.
This will infuriate the US, Australia and many other countries because it would affect all flights into and out of Europe, regardless of their origin or destination.
US and Australian airlines would have to buy permits to cover their emissions on their European routes.
