It appears there is a chance that we will be paying an environmental surcharge on flights arriving into and departing from the EU, although this is only draft legislation at this stage.

Carbon scheme to hit air travellers

Ben Webster November 17, 2006

AIRLINE passengers on all flights arriving or departing from European Union airports will pay up to $67 extra for a return ticket to cover the environmental damage caused by their flights, under European Commission proposals to address climate change.

Draft legislation to be published next month would require all flights arriving or departing from EU airports to buy permits to cover their carbon dioxide emissions.

The document says airlines would join Europe's emissions trading scheme by 2011 and predicts they will pass on the costs to their passengers.

The report estimates that passengers on flights within Europe would pay an extra E9 ($15) for a ticket, with the actual sum depending on the price of the permits. Those flying long haul would pay up to E40.

This will infuriate the US, Australia and many other countries because it would affect all flights into and out of Europe, regardless of their origin or destination.

US and Australian airlines would have to buy permits to cover their emissions on their European routes.

more from theaustralian.news.com.au.....

Other industries have been subjected to emission monitoring for some time, so I guess that it was only a matter of time before it was applied to the air industry.

I already posted to my blog about this - not good news.

You're one step ahead of me Kiwi Flyer... Actually it is probably more than one but that wouldn't fit the colloquism :)

And just how will the money be spent?

As I understand not earmarked for anything in particular - would just go into the general tax pot of each government. UK (and lesser extent France and Germany) would get quite a windfall from all the longhaul flights.

You know Kiwi, I'm a bit disappointed in your response.

As a citizen of the EU, I think that the environment is important. You obviously don't think so.

:-|

of course it is important, but if collecting tax for environmental purposes monies raised should be used for environmental purposes - that is not the case here

Yes, but that's "here".

PS, where is here - Oz I assume (NZ is more environmentally sensitive, god bless Helen).

no I am talking about the EU

the proposal is simply raising a tax under environmental concerns, but AFAIK no requirement for any EU government to spend the funds raised on environment
