EU angers UK with support for Spain's Gibraltar airport claims

The British government has expressed anger after the EU offered tentative support for Spain’s territorial claim over the land on which Gibraltar airport is built.

Direct flights between the UK and EU destinations will continue to operate for nine months in the event of a no-deal Brexit under contingency plans agreed by Brussels.

Gibraltar airport, however, is not included in the scope of the plans, and EU legislation on the issue includes reference to Spain’s claim to land on which it is built.

This one could get fun! Just another part of the mess that is Brexit.

“The UK will reciprocate and provide, as a minimum, equivalent rights to airlines from those European states.”

So if Spain plays hardball over this, will it have reprocusions for Iberia, which would become a concern for IAG.?
I read it as Spanish government opportunism under the cloak of brexit. A distraction from their a Catalonian independence problem?

Spain needs UK tourists much more than UK needs them. It's just a game & EU will lose. Surely german workers are getting really sick of supporting countries like greece, italy, spain & portugal.

Actually the UK's already discovered that the EU doesn't need them more than they need the EU, and that the German car companies are not actually rushing in to save them. :D

German car companies ? Their sales to UK might plummet.

Do they still make cars in UK ? In any large numbers ?

If not, then sales of Japanese & other Asian made cars will increase along with BMWs that are made in USA & South Africa.

IMO

It's just a game, that the EU will lose & eventually the EU will probably break up, as too many bludging countries like above.

I think they're quite happy selling to the rest of the world, thanks to the wide reaching trade deals the EU has done. They also like the stability of the single market and value it above childish nationalism. Funny that :D

with the world heading into the biggest recession ever, german car makers are going to suffer, as many choose to either not buy a new car, not buy at car at all, or, buy a cheaper asian one

Lol, if the German car companies are coming to the rescue they've got about 29 days left.

Watch for that to drop off as the Japanese car companies pull out. Fun times ahead.
Yes, I agree. If there's a hard Brexit the Japanese manufacturers will see UK based production less enticing, although the signing last month of a new EU/Japanese trade agreement removes the duty on Japanese imported cars anyway, again reducing the incentive to manufacture in the UK.

You don't just up and move a factory on a whim. And shipping cars from Japan to Europe is hardly cheap or efficient. While the FTA may have reduced long-term the incentive to build new factories in Europe it's extremely unlikely it would have made them close the existing ones if not for Brexit.

Oh dear someone has been reading too much remainer propaganda.Honda has indeed already closed it's UK plant-but it made diesel engined cars so the closure is more to do with the EU than Brexit.Since then it has closed nearly all of it's overseas production to begin exclusively manufacturing in Japan once again.
Nissan has also closed it's manufacturing in the UK but once again because it produced diesel cars there.I guess the Japanese didn't trust German diesel technology.:D

The real test is what BMW will do with the Mini or Peugot do with the Vauxhall.

Hilarious! They made 94% petrol cars. What was that about too much propaganda? :D:D:D

A few weeks ago Honda announced that it would close its Swindon factory in 2021 where it makes the Civic (from which Australian Civics are sourced). In 2016 it made 134000 cars there.
The company stated that the decision was not related to Brexit, but rather to the sharp reduction in the demand for diesel engined cars, which are rapidly falling out of favour in Europe.

For financial year 2018/19, the breakdown of cars built at Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd is Diesel 6% and Petrol 94%.

Having visited Gibraltar last year – such an odd place – I'm not sure I understand how the airport is (other than technically) in Spain, considering the border control point (which I would imagine HAS to be in UK territory) is further North than the airport. Perhaps Spain should consider their own glass houses in North Africa – cough, Ceuta & Melilla – before picking up a stone.

I think their complaint is that the land it sits on was not part of the original land ceded to Great Britain in the treaty of whatever/whenever (Utrecht? can't remember).

I agree that the Spanish enclaves in North Africa do somewhat weaken their case :)
