And the Federal Government could only manage $1m itself...........go figure.

Well the federal government is deeply in debt and run by financial nutcases. Etihad hasn't turned a profit since it started flights in 2003, so it's probably about par.

Either way, people coughing about how little the federal govt is handing out in donations - who is going to end up footing the bill for all the federal highways and fixing the infrastructure in Queensland? Won't be Nanna Bligh's govt - they've been having an asset fire sale because of their brilliant economic management has resulted in those fat piles of cash they leave piled up around parliament house.

Wait, what?

$250,000 from Virgin Blue + staff appeal (Matched by Virgin Blue) + customer appeal.

So they'll also be over the $1 mill mark I expect (eventually).

And Qantas has put in $500K + an additional amount ($1000 per run scored at the Australia vs. England One Day International ). So expectation is about $1 million.

$1 Million seems to be the Airline figure!

Given that the Q inQantas is Queensland expect at least $2m!

I Think in some ways it's almost "expected" that qf and DJ would do something. Still kudos to them.

Kudos to EY given they are a foreign company, don't serve north Queensland, and if they get a spike in bookings well fair enough.

Wonder if any other o/s carriers will do similar?

........any word from the big mining companies?

I expect BHPB will already be putting in a lot of money to rebuild around it's operations in central Queensland and to help those communities. Xstrata similarly. I'm not sure how the gulf is faring but is Rio involved with Alcan up that way? If so they'll be putting into those communities.

The miners have been very generous given the circumstances,

Macarthur Coal donated 250K on Jan 1
Rio donated $1m on Jan 3
BHPB donated $1m on Jan 1
Xstrata were one of the first to move on Dec 31 with $1m

Thats on top of making sure staff are at skeleton levels in the mines to enable people to prepare and to recover from the disaster, especially in Emerald which is now two for two.

Great stuff by EY to pitch in to the appeal. If they get more bookings as a result then they deserve it.

I've noticed EY putting their face out there a lot charity-wise. I was at a Shane Warne Foundation breakfast on Boxing Day and EY was plastered everywhere. They donated a $20k package to see the Abu Dhabi GP in the auction as well.

I am not much of a believer in random charitable donations by companies - if shareholders want to donate to charities then let the shareholders decide where the donation should go. They are just giving away the shareholders' profits.

Not trying to be contrary - just not something I believe in. I also find it somewhat cynical as well if any of the motivation is driven by improving brand...

Of course, such "donations" may already accounted for in the form of a budgetary "bucket" set aside for such donations(/promotion/advertising).

Then they shouldn't have budgeted to give away the shareholders' money...

And are fully tax deductible, had the same pot been returned to shareholders who are taxed at personal levels after franking credits for company tax then that pot would have been considerably smaller even if it was passed on in full to one cause.

Etihad pay tax? They're getting a raw deal in terms of other UAE companies if that's the case :p
