Emirates Skywards Questions

The 777 J product is more relevant to this thread

Well, that would be fine, except for these 2 salient points.

1. Garuda do not fly any 777s
2. Garuda do not fly to BNE, which is where EK435 travels. Garuda do fly to/from SYD, and that is where EK fly the A380.

Please GA vs EK J, stop the fight.

I'm not sure if I get the point of the above. All I know is that while I admire the efforts by the new Garuda management to pull the airline out of the depths of proverbial swamp, I'm just not sure how you can realistically compare EK and GA in the same breath.

Sure, EK have some product consistency issues with their old J seat still finding its way into the fleet, but that product is being phased out and upgraded relatively quickly. The new J seat on the 777 and the seat on the A380 is what you will see fleet wide.

EK 435 for the last month ran the old seat config in all classes, but this was a temp thing. Three new 777's are due starting next month, 3 x 380's are due this year and then a swag of 380's arrive next year. The rumour I hear is that MEL may get the 380 next (the direct MEL-DXB).

While the 777 seat is not 100% "flat" I have no trouble sleeping on it and have slept on it plenty (and am fussy!).

You're then comparing arguably the worlds best IFE's with larger screens and 1200 channels, in seat power in all classes, USB access, chauffeur drive at both ends, a very good global lounge product, and many more flight options ex Australia.

I will admit my bias upfront. To me - there is no comparison. Bang for your buck, EK wins.

No fight

1. The reference to the 777 refers to the fact that EK435 is on the 777. GA do not need to fly the same bird.

2. The A380 does not fly to BNE, so any reference to the A380 is not relevant to the OP.

GA was used as a reference point to highlight the perceived quality of the J product on the EK 777

EK is having problems getting the A380's. Firstly they are going to other routes, because the Australian markets is considered less important than the Asian and US market. Secondly, China has agreed to buy Boeing before Airbus (Chinese Presidents visit to US), and Airbus have now agreed to put Chinese airline first. China Eastern is to get two A380 this year instead of next year and 2013. Air China is also to get A380 this year. This is to make sure that they don't become all Boeing airlines, and because they are the biggest spends on Aviation this year ( see Aviation trade papers). I have been told that the Mel to Dxb route and A380 is huge problem for EK, they are loosing J customer hand over fist. Because they have been promising to have A380's on the route for the last 3 years, and still no show. The last A380 was for the Sheik to fly to and from the Melb Cup last year. Sydney numbers are holding up well, and Brisbane are just OK.But Melb J are bad, very bad, Y is OK for Melb. The Chinese Airlines are going to up the level of commitment and service levels this year and next. But the will need to, as there service levels and Planes are well, how can I put this ....S...T. Pilots are being trained in Aus, and Aircrew's in UK. With Aircrew trainers from UK working in China. The Chinese are very aware that their service levels need improvement. Flights from Melb to Pudong are an example, from the 27th March the Airbus 340-300 will be changed to Boeing 767-300ER (these are believed to be ex Shanghai Airline planes, god help us, what will they be like). This is in preparation for the A380, some time this year. Now you may all be asking yourselves why, well I believe it is political, more than economics. Australia is Chinas most important source of raw minerals and LPG. Public opinion is very important, and China wants to be see to be economic partners with Australia. This is more so after Julia Gallard visit to Washington. As with everything only time will tell, and my source are pretty good.

Yeah flying from brisbane to Glasgow with a refuel/change of plane (not sure which ) on 2nd May. I know stil a little while away, but just thought I'd ask. Ok, might give them a call and ask them to email me if any upgrades are available.

Does anyone know much about this route? Is it a busy one?

Busy Glasgow to BNE, not the other way though.......

Food good, plenty of it

IFE good, a lot to choose from.

They can't pour wine to save their lives, they have these glasses like your parents used to sip sherry out of.

J class seat, generally coughpy, compared to other offerings in the market place.

Sorry to quotes ones self, coughpy J seats unless in the 380!

Flown SYD-GLA a couple of times both in whY. If I had to fly economy I would choose EK without question. Great FA's, the best IFE on the planet. Ask for an exit row ( my experience is not recent so not sure if they charge for this now).
As maggs says DXB is great to look around and shop for a short stop.
My kids are fairly discerning and will ask if we are flying EK as they love the IFE
In J a bit hit and miss depending on the aircraft. They do a great dessert trolley, and serve the cheeses of your choice.
A mixed class fare might be an option BNE-DXB in J with the GLA leg in Y ??

Mixed in EK is now very expensive, you will need to look at $6200 for Bne to Glasgow. Also EK Y plane configation is 3-4-3. I would look at Etihad which is 2-4-2, to manchester then quick flight up to Glasgow.

No, it is not. For EK, The Australian market is 10 times that of the US.

No, I think that honour goes to Indigo. In fact they made the largest purchase in history.

Emirates J on the dirct flight MEL-DXB is booming. The MEL-SIN route is solid and MEL-KUL not so much.

Firstly the US market for EK is not about size, it is about Political imperatives.

Secondly the IndiGo order is one order, the Chinese order is across a number of carriers. It is part of a 1.5 trillion yuan investment in Aviation. Hong Kong Airlines alone have ordered 30 787-9s, six 777 Freighters and two 787-8 VIP planes. Air China have placed an order, Cathay Pacific, an affiliate of Air China has ordered the freighter version of the Boeing 747. So I believe the total will exceed the IndiGo order, and more are in the pipe line.

Thirdly, Loading out of Melb for EK in J, are bad. You can not argue with this my is most firm on this. They are saying that Dubai is giving Management **** over it in Australia.

I've had great experiences with Emirates. Have had quite a few op ups to F. The last one was when i was already seated on board, very welcome surprise on the A380 Dubai - Syd.
The one thing i hate about the airline is the lounges in Dubai, it's far from relaxing, and massively overcrowded!! Feels like your in with the masses, it's just your food and drink are free. Many times you need to ask people to sit at their table because there simply isn't a seat. The other bad thing about Dubai is that every time i am not on the A380 it's an erratic bus trip to the plane.
However they treat me very well due to status, so i'm staying loyal.

My sources have read what I have written, and they have told me that ONLY China Southern Airlines (China's largest Airline), have bought Airbus A380's.

So, with Emirates the largest A380 client in the world by a country mile, Airbus is going to upset them by turning over newly built aircraft to CZ? Maybe CZ/MU will be promised earlier dates, but we all now how these dates inconveniently slip. God knows Qantas has fallen hook, line and sinker for that old chestnut.

From a political imperative, I don't think anybody would dispute that the current, nasty, Canadian Govt dispute with the UAE dwarfs anything between the UAE and the US.

Other than the 777-300ER, Boeing has no product to offer to compete with the A380. They put their eggs in a different basket. (and ultimately it might prove gold, but for now it is tin)
Personally, I'd like to see more 748s being purchased - but other than Lufthansa Korean Airlines and freight those aircraft seem to be on the nose.

The Chinese airlines (and that phrase does not include the UK owned CX/KA) will have all their 120-180 passenger aircraft requirements met by the C919 for 2016. So......really they are only looking at Airbus/Boeing purchases for 200pax and above.

Ultimately, perspective can be gained by the following stats.
Confirmed A380 orders

Air China = 0
China Eastern = 0
China Southern = 5
Etihad = 10
Korean Airlines = 10
Air France = 12
Lufthansa = 15
Singapore Airlines = 19
Qantas = 20
Emirates = a LAZY 90

If you find that a bit disappointing then you probably need to lower your expectations.
The travel packs have nothing special, just buy yourself some shaving cream and Old Spice, tie it up in a handkerchief and you will feel the same warm glow.

You will probably be gifted eye shades and a pair of socks though.
