Flying SIN to MEL in mid July in J. I have a choice of EK 777 or QF A330-300.

Which would you choose. Having flown the 777 previously I would probably choose it over the A330-300 unless I managed to score the new J class seats.

What are the chances of that?

If flying J, then EK, although MEL-SIN is the launch route for the new QF J suite. If whY, then QF. 10 across on an EK 777 is not nice.

Have a look at the QF seat map and if you don't know how, let us know approx dates of travel and someone may be able check the seat map that day.

I would think by July you would have a pretty good chance of being on an upgraded A330 (one of the learned friends here will probably know). But I'd think arrival time into Singapore may play a part too. The QF flight is pretty well timed for early arrival into SIN, whereas EK is well timed for those wanting to have the day in Melbourne.

Personally, I'd go for dinner in Singapore.

I would personally take the QF 333 any day, even with the old QF J seats. The EK 77W J seats with the slopey 2-3-2 arrangement are shocking. Service on EK in J is average at best also.

Except swilk mentioned they were travelling from SIN to MEL, where the flight time is sort of similar (19:55 vs 22:40). If sleeping on planes is a difficulty, the 22:40 may be a better option as it leaves later. However if sleeping is not a difficulty (or assisted by sleep medication) then the 19:55 may be better, if it's on the new seats. Personally I'd take EK 773 over QF 330 old seats, but new seats maybe the QF is better.

I would also always take the Qantas flight on the A330 over the Emirates 777 anytime. Flew home from BKK on the Emirates flight and the 2-3-2 config in J is not great and the seats are also on an angle.

And the Qantas service and food beats Emirates hands down in my opinion in J.

Economy on the QF 330 is rubbish. Bulkhead is cramped meaning the 2 aisle exit seats are the only decent ones.

777 exit seat with better food on EK.. no comparison.

Let's not forget that the 777 is 10 across. That isn't everyone's cup of tea

2-3-2 on the 777 is it not vs 2-2-2 at the worst on the 330.

Not much difference in seat width though as 777 is a wider plane. Config aside from memory I m pretty sure the EK seats although angled go flatter than the QF seats. I certainly found them more comfortable when put into sleeping positions than the infamous sky slope seats.

Still a middle seat in J is a middle seat regardless of width.

I could not disagree more on EK.

And I could not disagree more on old QF.

Each to their own, so I respect your view which is 100% correct for you, but not for me!

Anyway this line of argument is irrelevant. The OP stated a preference for EK over the old QF seats, but I think most (all?) of us would agree that new QF seats would be better. Can be checked using seat map, and if not available now and the J fare is flexible them monitoring seat map of QF flight and moving if the new type of seat becomes available on the QF flight - is an option.

Given the SIN routes are being given preference for the new config I'd say there is a VERY good chance it will be new J by July as there should be at least 4 A330-300 reconfigured by then.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'll monitor the situation and see if the new J seats turn up. That will clinch it for me.

I am looking at July 15th. Anyway to tell if flights on that day have the new seats?

Definitely fly the QF A330 if you have the new suites. Much better than the EK 777-300ER in J.

Very true. My bad! In that case I'd go QF if its upgraded A330. If it's not, then EK. But really it'd a battle of sloper seats :-(
