Forgot to add the managers comment was specifically re the BKK flight as this was designated (his words) "short haul" so if you are travelling to London or Dubai, I think you would still be eligible
That's strange. We did exactly your trip but from Adelaide - (Syd) - BKK - (Syd) - Adelaide in December January 2015 with domestic Q and Emirates J international (and also F upgrade). Chauffeur Adelaide, Chauffeur BKK both to and from airport.

The chauffeur service was only booked through Qantas website. Maybe that's when it went pear shaped.

We are doing DBX trip on Emirates at Christmas. Maybe we should book through the Qantas website. But looking at the Emirates website it allows us to book. Might stick with Qantas.

9 hours is shorthaul? I think you should pm Red Roo. We need clarification here.

To answer the original question, as one who has taken EK 777 a few times and QF 330 as well I struggle to find a substantial difference in comfort between the two (and prefer a 3-3-3 configured 777 - SQ or BA -to either). If you look at seat guru both list the seat width as 17" (pitch 31" on QF and 32" on EK although legroom I think similar as EK seats thicker). It feels as if EK's aisles are narrower.

On EK take an exit row (can only allocate at airport checkin, so need to get there early) or aisle seat in centre bank of 4. The middle seats in the centre of plane are least likely to be allocated and you only have 1, not 2 people beside you who might want to get out of their seats.
