Listening to 3aw they are reporting that 40 people have been injured on a Qantas plane which has landed (Learmouth?) after a mayday call.

Anybody have any further news?

I heard it was an A320, but I guess we will have to wait for the news to come out a bit

Another update, A320 with 300+ pax on board, no idea why the mayday was called but the plane landed nine minutes after the incident.

QF72 (from Singapore) reported by WA police, injuries lacerations and possible broken bones.
Taken to Exmouth hospital, RFDS on way to scene.

Shown as delayed, due to land at Perth at 1410 expected 1550 (WA time which is 3 hours behind NSW/ACT/VIC)

I am going to take a stab and say QF72 was an A330. IME the exmouth area is bad for turbulence.

Pure speculation from what has been noted would make it an A330-300 that experienced severe turbulence.

According to Qantas web site, QF72 is "Delayed" with an ETA into PER of 15:50. Lets see if that gets updated shortly.

How ridiculous, surely they must know where their planes are and what is happening especially at a time like this.
indeed they must know. But I hope they are just trying to gather other details and facts, especially regarding injuries, before making any public comments. It could be very traumatic for family and friends of the passengers on the flight if such details are not made available in a sensitive manner.

I know we are quick to bag the media for mixing up details (and I am as quick as anyone else), but my first thoughts and prayers are for the passengers and crew involved. I do hope the reported injuries are not too severe.

Text of QF statement just released.

SYDNEY, 7 October 2008:
Qantas said today that a number of passengers and crew sustained injuries, including fractures and lacerations, on board QF72 this afternoon en route from Singapore to Perth following a sudden change in altitude.
The flight, operated by an A330-300 aircraft with 303 passengers and 10 crew, diverted to Learmonth in Western Australia and landed at approximately 3.30pm local time.
The flight had been due to land in Perth at 3.50pm.
Emergency services, including medical attendants, met the aircraft on landing.
Qantas said there were no details available at this stage as to what caused the altitude change.

Further information will be issued as soon as it is available.

The circumstances reported so far instantly reminded me of the novel - Airframe - Michael Chrichton. (fiction) Anyone read it? :p

ABC radio are reporting 15 with severe lacerations and 10 with broken bones.

Sounds awful - one of my biggest fears when flying :(

I hope Exmouth hospital can cope with 15 patients. They probably only have 4 beds in the Emergency Department, and I doubt there are more than 2 ambulances plus a couple of RFDS planes.

According to Perth Airport, the return flight to SIN (QF71) has been cancelled, but Qantas still have it departing on schedule.

I'm sure just a simple case of QF schedule not been updated yet. Unless they can magically source an equiv sized plane to do QF71.

Just thought it odd that the airport had it as cancelled, but not the operator!
