Travelling BNE - ADL in a few months with wife, 6mo baby and 2yr toddler. Considering upgrading to Economy X to make the journey a little more comfortable for all involved.

Worth the $50/pp each way?

I have never paid for it... However I get it on most flights due to status. Row 3 is a good for leg room, but Brissy to Adelaide i wouldn't bother paying for it.... The only perk you might find with it is, you might gain extra seats because people have to pay.. I generally always have a seat or row free except Melb to Syd. Families can board prior to priority which is the only other perk..

It would be $300 total for the return trip in X. Wife, Me, Toddler (the infant will be on the lap/free)
You will only be making it more comfortable for you and the wife, the toddler wont need any extra leg room or reserved cabin baggage space and with a baby in arms you will get priority boarding. So really what you are getting (leg room, baggage space reserved) is just for you and the wife......is it worth it, only you can decide. If it was a very special trip/occasion I would perhaps consider it.

Fair enough. That's what I expected. I'm over 6 foot, so the leg room is desirable. The others don't care about that so much.

I would consider it myself - BNE-ADL flights are often chockers and the flight length makes it a bit more worthwhile than just a SYD-MEL hop, and whoever is holding the infant will appreciate the extra space...

Pay for it on the flight there, see if you think it's worth it and then decide if you buy it on the way back?

This is good advice. Before I got the status I have I usually paid extra for Economy X. Priority boarding is a bonus, although you would no doubt get it any way with the kid.

since its just the 2 of you and infant, id save the $$. You'll have enough room in a regular row of 3 seats between you.
If it were just the 2 of you, then i'd pay for yx

I didn’t find economy x that great, particularly if you are paying for it. Unluckily the time I used it, flight attendants did not respect the economy x marked space to store bags. I’d rather save the $300 and put it towards the trip. I’d dare to say no, but ymmv.

As I became a WP prior to the introduction of YX, I have been a bit isolated from what VA (and QF) are trying to charge for an extra legroom seat (it just shows as $0.00 upon selection).

If you fly a fair bit of domestic Y, being a WP can save thousands over a year. I just priced my flights for later in the week and it would have cost me $104 in YX seating for those two flights alone.

Have paid and used it several times, in your case, for that distance flown, so long as the plane is a 737, and won't get swapped to a 320 or an F100, its good, esp if you can pick rows 3 - 6/7, as these do not have the quasi "over wing exit help them" talk, I am ashamed to sit in the over wing exit zone, as you have to watch the crew telling you their scrip.
$50 per sector is not all that much, seeing you would have paid $199 for the trip, prior to economy X fee.
You can also buy lounge access in Aust at the VA the Lounge domestic reception counter, ...
Economy X does not give extra or more SC, and you get the same type of food as in Y, except you have a bit more overhead bag room, more space in front, greater chance of a shadow (depends on loadings of course, time or day, day of week, school hols or not).
I certainly would do it again.
If your plane is a 320, then its only row 1s , and over wing economy X, or it F100, also over wing economy X, for which you will get the spiel with the card on seat.

Id even see what the minimum upgrade $ is and put in for that. May only be $140? which would then give you lounge access, and J seats and meals.

Flight itinerary says 737 out of BNE, so should be all set.
