Earning MP miles in Australia

Just did MEL-SIN-LHR and CDG-SIN-MEL on SQ so that should keep my UA MP account safe for another 12 months. I know some have noted that the token donation of miles to charity can work for maintaining activity - is there a minimum donation required?

Also, how else can I keep the account safe by earning even minimal miles in Australia? Hire cars and hotel stays are the obvious ones, but are there any others?
