Last month we arrived on AY32 at 14:50, collected our bags, and then immediately checked them in for AY99 departing at 00:35 (we were travelling on separate tickets). We used our spare time to head into Helsinki, but did spend a number of hours in the non-Schengen Business Lounge prior to boarding.

If you have access to the Platinum Wing, this is not open for the midnight departures, so I'd recommend visiting that first for better food and the saunas etc.
The regular Business Lounge is nice, despite the lack of windows. It never felt busy, the food and bar were decent, and the showers solid (although there are too few of them, but this doesn't seem to be an issue for the midnight wave). Overall, a very relaxing place to wait, IMO. Since you'd have a lot of time, you could drop into the Schengen Lounge as well to enjoy the tarmac views, although the food and drink offering is a bit pared back.

Just in the separate tickets, did AY refuse to check in all the way because of separate tickets?

We have an upcoming itinerary where we have the same, couldn’t add the euro sector to the existing ticket. Just wondering what our chances of success are going to be in asking.

We didn't bother to ask when we checked in - we had an ~9 hour layover in HEL and the contract staff at YYZ had only been dealing with AY for about a month so didn't want to stretch them. If we had a tighter connection and/or were at a more experienced outstation we would've asked about through-checking.

Last month (June) the non Schengen Platinum wing was open until midnight.

Finnair. While I appreciate all replies I'd appreciate an answer to my question. Maybe I should rephrase. I'm a cheap cough and I'd like to know how much I can abuse my business class privileges by arriving ridicuously early at the lounge

I went through HEL three times in May, and like you wished to maximise my benefits for minimum cost! These three scenarios may (or not) be HELful for others.
First time NRT-HEL-LHR. I had to pass transit security and then back into non-Schengen. Around a 2.5 hr connection from memory and was pretty straighforward. Platinum shut in the AM.

Second time was arriving from LHR around 2200 with a 0700 departure to TOS on a separate PNR. I was able to enter the platinum zone as the inbound from LHR was not required to be drafted via the transit security. The lady guarding the door did suggest that entry was not exactly within the rules but on this occasion, I could go in.
I showered up there and hung out for a bit until it emptied out for the last flight prior to closing for the night. Then I went to the quiet room or whatever it is called. This is just a bit past the entrance to the lounge.
I made the pillows into a bit of a makeshift bed and did my best to sleep for a few hours. I could not really see the point of trapsing to one of the overpriced airport motels for what would have ended up being less than a few hours in the bed anyway.
From memory around five thirty, I shook myself off, washed my face and went through a near empty immigration and arrived at the Schengen bit. I wondered around there until the lounge opened up and entered.
I thought this was a particularly good lounge for what we would consider a "domestic" lounge. As others have mentioned, great views and a decent breakfast spread. From memory there were more showers in the gold section than the platinum section.

Third time, which probably answers your question best SPudWA:
Inbound from TOS was around 1500. I lobbed back at the Schengen lounge hoping to enter but at least stow my bag as I noticed they had plenty of luggage lockers on the previous visit a few days prior. I enquired on that previous visit about entry following the TOS flight on Monday and the guard told me I could stow my bag but not enter.

Anyway, on showing both my inbound from TOS and outbound ticket for HKG early the following morn, I was welcomed warmly. Post bag stowing, I had a bight to eat as catering on the ATR was limited and thence headed down for the train station. Spent a few hours on foot around HEL proper and back on the train around eight ish I think.

Back at Schengen a different person did not bat an eyelid when I scanned my HKG ticket. Enjoyed a late arvo beer with a view prior to collecting my bags and heading through immigration which was again empty to the Non Schengen Platinum bit. The immigration girl was even in for a chat which was a first for me at any international border station.

Once back in the Platinum sanctuary, I enjoyed a Negroni followed by some sit down dining. Cannot remember exactly what it was however I do remember it had asparagus as the waitress particularly recommended it. The asparagus, that is.

Thence I decamped to the sauna, showered up and headed to the gate for the long trip in 2K.

So in summation, based on my experience, you could enter Schengen and or non Schengen (so long as immigration is open) as early as you like. If I was there for an extended period I would def pick the Schengen as I do not like spaces without windows and natural light during daylight hours.
