I am flying from Brisbane to Hong Kong next week and will return to Sydney by ship then fly domestic sector of international flight back to Brisbane. Is it possible to buy duty free on the way out and pick it up in Brisbane on return? maggies1

Hi maggies1,
I am pretty sure you need to have the duty free on you when you clear Custom/Immigration.....so that being the case you couldn't pick it up in Brissie given you'll clear in Sydney. If you are planning on getting grog, I'd wait till you get on the ship and buy it there. Cheap cheap cheap.

And with that in mind, you couldn't pick up in BNE (if indeed you can't clear customs at BNE) due to the LAGS issue.

You will get tripped up by the Int'l LAG rules if you try to carry alcohol SYD-BNE.

I am fairly sure the SYD and MEL duty free providers have a 'buy now, pick up on return' facility. So you should be ok as you are leaving and returning through BNE (assuming they do the same thing). The only thing that may trip you up is that you will have an orange D sticker on your boarding pass when you do the SYD-BNE leg.

I suggest finding the name of the BNE duty free provider and give them a call. Make sure you speak to a reasonably senior person who understands the intricacies of your situation.

However, if the OP cleared customs in SYD, I wouldn't imagine they could pick it up in BNE.

I would be buying it on the ship as ship prices are usually a lot cheaper than anything you can buy in Australia.
Then pack it in your luggage and check it through to BNE.

Enjoy the cruise:D

Thank you every one for your replies. I will call the duty free in Brisbane. It does say you can order and pick up on your return but I will be breaking my journey sort of as I return by ship. I am joining the Queen Mary 2 in Hong Kong next Sunday, really looking forward to it. I have to go to Sydney from Brisbane then back to Brisbane to catch the flight to Hong Kong. I moved to Brisbane since I purchased the airfares and I could not drop the first sector without penalty Maggies1

As you'll be entering AU in SYD you won't be able to pick up DF in BNE. Whilst you will be going past customs again in BNE it doesn't count as it's as far as they are concerned you are simple a dom pax on the flight.

To have been able to pick up your DF in BNE you would need to not go via any sort of immi in SYD. More than possible if arriving by plane, but pretty difficult if there is a boat involved.

PS, don't forget LAG rule going SYD-BNE on an int flight. you won't be able to buy DF, but all other rules will be in effect.
